Blue, gold, yellow and purple Ryukakusan packs can turn a small purchase into another decision. Choose the flavour first, then a pack that suits carrying or sharing. Finding a bag of candy should not take over your trip.

First, a simple distinction
龍角散ののどすっきり飴 is a food—a throat candy for a refreshing feeling. It is different from Ryukakusan powder and Direct medicines. The candy should not be treated as an equivalent cough treatment.
Your 3-minute flavour choice

Original | Start with the classic
A good starting point for the range. Herbal powder and extracts are blended into the candy for a lasting herbal taste. This is not the sugar-free version.

120max | Herbal with a milky taste
Contains milk ingredients, royal jelly and propolis. Its herbal-powder blend ratio is 20% higher than the original—not a claim of 20% better treatment.

Shikuwasa | Okinawan citrus
Herbs with a shikuwasa citrus flavour. Look for シークヮーサー, rather than relying only on the yellow bag.

Blackcurrant & blueberry
Look for シュガーレス. This version contains vitamin C and individually wrapped pieces, useful for sharing. Sugar-free does not mean calorie-free or unlimited portions.
These are flavour and packaging choices, not a ranking of cough-treatment strength.

Before buying for someone, think about whether they prefer herbal, milky or fruity flavours. The purple blackcurrant-and-blueberry bag has individually wrapped pieces, convenient for sharing. Do not assume every large bag has individually wrapped candies.
Bag or stick pack? Think about how you will carry it
For your own bag: consider a stick pack
The original comes in a slim 10-piece stick pack. A larger bag may be more convenient to keep at your accommodation.
For sharing: check the individual wrappers
The blackcurrant-and-blueberry bag is 75 g including individual wrappers. The original, 120max and shikuwasa bags pictured are 88 g. Formats and quantities differ.

“Stick” describes a format, not a medicine category. This is a stick pack of candy, distinct from Ryukakusan Direct stick medicine sachets. If someone asks for “Ryukakusan sticks”, a photo avoids an easy mix-up.
Where to buy in Japan: look along your route
Start with drugstores, convenience stores or supermarkets along your route, checking the candy or throat-candy section. The food products may be shelved separately from Ryukakusan medicines. If you cannot spot the pack, show its photo to a staff member.
Convenience stores are worth a look
For example, 7-Eleven Japan lists a 120max bag. This suggests a place to look, not guaranteed stock at every branch.
Try the candy aisle at a drugstore or supermarket
Add it to a stop you already planned. For a specific flavour, asking about the exact pack saves more time than visiting shops at random.
No store type always wins
Ranges and stock change. An old shortage story does not establish a nationwide shortage today, nor that one store type is always cheaper or better stocked.
Before buying, take a quick look at the back
- Milk ingredients: 120max contains milk, royal jelly and propolis. Check the ingredient list if any are a concern.
- Sugar and calories: original, 120max and shikuwasa contain sugar. The sugar-free berry version still contains calories and carbohydrates.
- Hard-candy care: let it dissolve slowly; do not swallow it whole or eat it while running. It is unsuitable for children who cannot safely manage hard candy.
- Do not delay care with candy: ongoing cough, significant pain or fever needs a separate assessment. Breathing or swallowing difficulty needs medical attention.

Choose your flavour, then enjoy your trip
Pick a flavour, save its pack photo, and look in a shop you will already pass. There is no need to collect every colour or treat “120” as an automatic upgrade.
If you are looking for medicine for cough symptoms, see our Ryukakusan powder and Direct comparison. The candy selection above is a different decision.
Questions before you buy or use it
Is Ryukakusan throat candy a medicine?
All four のどすっきり飴 products in this guide are foods. The berry version is a vitamin C food with nutrient-function labelling, not a cough medicine. Ryukakusan powder and Direct are separate medicines.
Does 120max mean 20% better cough relief?
No. The claim refers to a 20% higher proportion of herbal powder compared with the original candy. It is not a comparison of medical effectiveness.
Can I buy it at a convenience store?
7-Eleven Japan lists products including the 120max bag, but individual shops and dates vary. Look along your route or ask with a pack photo; availability is not guaranteed at every store.
Is the purple sugar-free version calorie-free?
No. The manufacturer lists 48 kcal per six pieces (18 g), with 0 g sugars but carbohydrates still present. Choose according to your dietary needs and the pack information.
