Bifina R, S and EX mainly differ in the daily sachet’s BB536 bifidobacteria count; S Pearl changes the format to two capsules a day. R provides 2.5 billion, S 5 billion and EX 10 billion BB536 bacteria. Two Pearl capsules also provide 5 billion. Choose sachets or capsules first, then compare the count and price rather than automatically buying the gold EX box.

I’m Irene, a Taiwan-born, Japan-licensed pharmacist working in a Japanese drugstore. Products mentioning the gut or bowel movements can easily be confused with intestinal medicines. This guide separates the practical differences between four Bifina foods and shows how to take their little capsules without chewing them.
Information checked on 13 October 2026, using current official Japanese information for Health Aid Bifina R, S, EX and S Pearl. Do not transfer these serving instructions to overseas versions, other Pearl products supplied through healthcare channels or other brands.
- Choose the format, then compare R, S and EX
- All four are foods
- Match the full name rather than the colour
- Compare the daily serving, not one capsule with one sachet
- Swallow the little capsules whole, without hot drinks
- S Pearl is different from “Bifidobacterium Pearl”
- Check allergies, pregnancy and medicines first

Choose the format, then compare R, S and EX
- Prefer one sachet a day and want a starting point for comparison? Look at R. One daily sachet provides 2.5 billion BB536 bacteria. Like S and EX, it separately lists 1 billion lactic acid bacteria and 0.30 g of oligosaccharides.
- Specifically want 5 billion BB536 bacteria in lemon-flavoured granules? Look at S. Its suggested serving is one sachet daily. Match the full ビフィーナS name rather than relying on a silver box.
- Want to compare a formula providing 10 billion BB536 bacteria? Look at EX. It is also one sachet daily, but the sachet contents weigh more. A higher count does not establish faster or stronger bowel effects.
- Dislike loose granules or want a formula without added oligosaccharides? Check S Pearl. Two daily capsules provide the same listed BB536 and lactic acid bacteria counts as S, without oligosaccharides in the ingredients. It still contains gelatin, soy and milk ingredients.
All four are foods
All four are Japanese Foods with Function Claims. Their notified claim concerns BB536 bifidobacteria being reported to improve intestinal flora and bowel movements. This is a food claim notified by the business on the basis of scientific evidence, not the individual government assessment required for Foods for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU), and not a medicine approval for treating or preventing disease.
Do not treat Bifina as an equivalent replacement for a medicine recommended for your digestive symptoms, or compare different products’ bacterial counts as a ranking of treatment effects. If persistent digestive symptoms are the reason you are shopping, consult a doctor or pharmacist rather than simply moving from R to EX or combining several gut products.
Match the full name rather than the colour

Compare the daily serving, not one capsule with one sachet
Every amount below is for the product’s suggested daily serving: one sachet for R, S or EX, and two capsules for S Pearl. These servings are for adult products. The products were not developed for people with an illness, minors, people who are pregnant, planning pregnancy or postpartum, or those breastfeeding.
| Product | Suggested daily serving | BB536 bifidobacteria per day | Separately listed lactic acid bacteria per day | Oligosaccharides per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R | 1 sachet (1.2 g) | 2.5 billion | 1 billion | 0.30 g |
| S | 1 sachet (1.4 g) | 5 billion | 1 billion | 0.30 g |
| EX | 1 sachet (2.0 g) | 10 billion | 1 billion | 0.30 g |
| S Pearl | 2 capsules (0.32 g) | 5 billion | 1 billion | Not listed in ingredients or composition |
BB536 in this table is Bifidobacterium longum BB536, labelled ビフィズス菌(ロンガム種BB536). It is listed separately from the lactic acid bacteria. S and S Pearl have the same daily counts for these two entries; the differences are the format, oligosaccharides and serving. That does not establish identical experiences for everyone, or mean EX works twice as well as S.
All four have the same type of notified function claim; this table is not evidence that one works better. If you have no particular bacterial count in mind, compare ease of swallowing, whether you want oligosaccharides and the price for an equivalent number of days. Diet, activity and everyday habits remain the foundation.
Swallow the little capsules whole, without hot drinks
- Check the full product name. Follow one sachet daily for R, S or EX, or two capsules daily for S Pearl.
- Swallow with water or another suitable drink, without chewing or biting open the capsules. Keep the little capsules inside the sachets intact too.
- Avoid hot drinks. Morishita Jintan gives 40°C or below as a guide; room-temperature water is a straightforward choice.

Morishita Jintan says Bifina can be taken at a convenient, consistent time; it does not require an empty stomach or bedtime. Keep to the suggested daily serving. Do not double up or take extra R or S sachets to reproduce EX’s bacterial count.
S Pearl is different from “Bifidobacterium Pearl”
Morishita Jintan also has a healthcare-channel product called ビフィズス菌Pearl, with an official one-capsule daily serving. That similar name does not change the instructions for the product in this guide: Health Aid Bifina S Pearl is two capsules daily. Match the complete name and pack before using another Pearl product’s directions.
Check allergies, pregnancy and medicines first
All four list gelatin, soy and milk ingredients. Pearl’s lack of added oligosaccharides does not make it dairy-free or vegan. If allergic to these ingredients, do not try the product on your own; check the full current ingredient list before buying.
All four state that they were not developed for people with an illness, minors, people who are pregnant, planning pregnancy or postpartum, or those breastfeeding. Consult a doctor if you have a medical condition, or a doctor or pharmacist if you take medicine. Food status does not make them a supplement for the whole family. Stop promptly and consult a doctor if you experience a change in your health after taking them.
If already using probiotics, an intestinal medicine or other gut supplements, show a pharmacist the names, strains, servings and ingredients together. Adding products does not necessarily improve the result and can make it harder to identify the cause of a problem. You do not need to stock up simply to collect more strains.
Pack sizes and storage
The current official range lists 30- and 60-sachet packs of R, S and EX, lasting 30 and 60 days; R also has a 20-sachet listing. S Pearl comes in 60 capsules/30 days and 120 capsules/60 days. An official listing does not mean every drugstore stocks it; check availability, especially for the capsule format.
Store away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity, out of young children’s reach. Avoid leaving them in a hot car while travelling. S Pearl readily absorbs moisture, so close the bottle after opening and finish promptly. Keep sachets with their packaging and best-before information rather than transferring the whole box into an unlabelled container.
My shopping order is: compare R, S and EX if sachet granules suit you; consider S Pearl if you prefer capsules and want to avoid added oligosaccharides. Then check allergens, one sachet versus two capsules, and the price for the same number of days. Use the bacterial count to identify the formula; the gold box is not an upgrade everyone needs.
