Identify what is on your nails before choosing a remover. In a Japanese drugstore, 除光液 and リムーバー both appear on nail-remover products, but the name alone does not tell you whether a bottle suits your manicure. A small bottle, fragrance or acetone in the ingredients is not enough to decide.

Three checks before you buy

Identify the manicure material, then match it to the remover’s stated use and full precautions. If the material is unknown, the use does not match or the warnings are unclear, do not buy it to experiment; ask the original salon or manufacturer.

Official KOJI and NAIL HOLIC product photos with their stated uses, plus a scene checking the manicure material name and complete precautions and asking the original salon or manufacturer if uncertain.
A matching use does not make every setting suitable. Read the complete label.

Intended use matters more than “acetone” or “acetone-free”

アセトン means acetone; ノンアセトン means acetone-free. These describe ingredients, not universal gel compatibility or a safety ranking. Acetone-free does not mean you can ignore precautions about ignition sources, ventilation or skin contact.

For example, KOJI’s ソフトジェルネイルオフリムーバー explicitly lists nail polish and soft gel among its uses. KOSÉ’s ネイルホリック トリートメントリムーバー describes nail-colour and glitter removal and contains acetone; that does not justify adding a claim that it works on every gel. These are label-reading examples, not a performance comparison or product recommendation.

A stated use for soft gel must not be expanded to every hard gel, extension, nail tip or adhesive. If you do not know what a salon used, ask first. Do not identify it by experimental rubbing, picking or filing.

Check the setting and the individual warnings

A matching purpose does not make every setting suitable. Sapporo’s Fire Bureau warns that remover vapour can ignite: keep ignition sources away and ventilate well. If your accommodation cannot meet the product’s precautions, do not use it there.

Individual warnings also matter. CHIFURE 除光液 S says not to use it on abnormal nails or for other purposes, to avoid contact with clothing and furniture, and to avoid heat and direct sunlight. Spills may dissolve or alter those materials. Shiseido’s トリートメント エナメルリムーバー 120mL specifies closing the cap after use and keeping it beyond infants’ reach. These examples are not a complete set of instructions for any bottle: read all the warnings on the product you buy.

Do not push through irritation. Do not use on skin with wounds, swelling or other abnormalities. Stop if redness, swelling, itching or irritation develops and consult a dermatologist. Keep remover out of your eyes. For accidental remover exposure, Shiseido advises immediately rinsing thoroughly with water or lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes, then obtaining an immediate eye-specialist examination. Do not rub your eyes or use eye drops on your own initiative.

A short checklist to take to the store

  • The full name of your polish or manicure material; ask the salon if you do not know.
  • Photos of the candidate remover’s name, intended uses and back-label warnings.
  • Your question: “Is this suitable for my manicure material, and when should it not be used?”

Choose bottle size after those checks—not a mismatched product just because you only need it once. If you actually want nail care or a reinforcing coat rather than a remover, see the Handveil nail-care and reinforcing-coat guide. Nail care does not replace checking removal compatibility.

Based on official web information, not hands-on testing or inspection of every packaging batch. This guide does not give soaking, filing or peeling instructions. Follow your product’s label and the original salon’s or manufacturer’s confirmation.
