Buying clothes-storage products at a Japanese drugstore? Do not choose by a familiar brand or hanging shape alone. The labels 防虫 (insect protection), 除湿 (moisture removal) and 防カビ (mold inhibition) describe different functions, and some products combine functions. First check your purpose, your storage space and anything already inside it. If one is unknown, do not buy another product simply to add on top.
This is a pre-purchase guide for clothes-storage products—not instructions for skin-applied insect repellents, food-storage pest products or use inside luggage. The named products illustrate how to read labels; they are not a ranking, and their directions do not automatically apply to other products in the same brand.
1. Read the function; do not guess from the shape
- 防虫: Read the product type and intended use. Check whether it is a せんい製品防虫剤, an insect-control product for textiles, rather than something intended for use on the body.
- 除湿 / 湿気とり: Check the intended space, what happens as moisture is absorbed, and the placement restrictions.
- 防カビ: This label alone does not establish moisture absorption or guarantee a mold-free wardrobe. ST describes Mushuda’s mold-inhibiting function as supplementary, not a guarantee that mold will never develop.
These functions are not mutually exclusive. For example, Okamoto’s 水とりぞうさん 防虫剤付クローゼット用(大判タイプ) lists both moisture absorption and protection against clothing insects. A hanging shape therefore does not tell you whether a product only removes moisture or only protects against insects. Nor does one combination product establish the functions of its entire range.
2. Identify the storage space before choosing a pack
引き出し・衣装ケース用 means for drawers and clothes-storage cases; クローゼット用 means for closets. These are intended-use labels, not decoration. Know the type and size of your storage space, and whether it meets the particular product’s conditions.
For example, Mushuda’s drawer/clothes-case product specifies quantities by storage volume and calls for an enclosed storage container. Do not choose a quantity solely by the number of garments, or transfer one drawer product’s quantity and placement directions to a different closet product. If suitability is unclear, note the dimensions, storage type and full product name before asking the manufacturer.
“Moisture remover” does not establish a universal placement rule either. Hakugen Earth’s ドライ&ドライUPコンパクト450mL collects liquid; its instructions prohibit tilted or overturned use and placement where clothing contacts the white moisture-permeable sheet. If you cannot meet that product’s placement conditions at home, do not buy it to improvise a setup. This example is not a placement guide for every moisture remover.
3. What is already inside? If you cannot identify it, do not add another product
If your storage already contains an insect-control product, check its original packaging for the name, ingredients and combination precautions, then check the new product. Two packs saying 防虫 do not establish that they can be used together. One brand’s answer about combinations is not permission for every product.
KINCHO’s Gongon FAQ gives product-specific combination advice while warning that some other insect-control ingredient combinations can liquefy and stain or discolor clothing. This guide does not provide a universal mixing chart. If the old product has lost its packaging and cannot be identified, do not add a new one. Gather packaging photos, full product names and details of the intended space for the manufacturer. Do not identify ingredients by smell or appearance alone.
When is it better not to buy today?
If the purpose, storage space or existing product is unclear, do not add or combine products yet. Also hold off if you cannot use and store it as directed while preventing access by young children or pets.

Read the complete package after purchase, too. Matching the intended use does not replace the precautions. The Mushuda product above requires keeping it out of young children’s reach and retaining the packaging for situations such as accidental ingestion; the Hakugen Earth product cautions against children or pets playing with it. Do not remove the chemical contents or modify containers to make them fit.
This guide does not guarantee insect protection, moisture removal or mold prevention. It is not a first-aid guide for ingestion or eye exposure. Follow the current packaging and official directions for the exact product; if an exposure or ingestion incident has occurred, seek appropriate professional assistance promptly rather than relying on this buying guide. Airline transport and import rules have not been checked here.
