Yakult also makes a BL bowel-regulation range in Japan: strawberry-flavoured chewable tablets and powder sachets. Both are designated quasi-drugs, with different minimum ages, formulas and directions. When buying for a child or relative, start with age and how the product is taken rather than bacterial figures.

I'm Irene, a Taiwan-born pharmacist licensed in Japan and working in a Japanese drugstore. This guide brings the two package names and directions together.

Milk allergy or ongoing treatment: ask first
For either product, consult a doctor, pharmacist or registered medicine seller before use if you have previously had an allergic reaction to milk or are receiving medical treatment. “Lactic acid bacteria” does not mean a product is automatically suitable for someone with milk allergy. Children need parental guidance and supervision.
Seek immediate medical care for sudden severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood or coffee-ground-like vomit. Bloody diarrhoea or repeated vomiting that prevents fluid intake also needs urgent assessment. Seek urgent medical advice now if a sick baby stops breast or bottle feeding, a child under five has fewer wet nappies, or you are worried about a baby under one year old. Do not rely on a bowel-regulation product while waiting.
Choose by age and form first
- Age five or over and prefer no water? Consider the chewable. It is strawberry-flavoured and should be chewed or allowed to dissolve in the mouth. It is not a sweet to eat freely.
- Prefer powder sachets, or need to compare labelled doses for a younger child? Look at the powder. It has labelled doses from three months of age, but first check whether an infant’s symptoms are suitable for self-care. A minimum age is not blanket reassurance for every unwell baby.
The differences go beyond flavour
| Japanese shelf name | Minimum labelled age | Form | Formula distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| BL chewable/ヤクルトBLチュアブル整腸薬 | 5 years | Strawberry-flavoured; chew or dissolve in mouth; retail 126-tablet bottle | Bifidobacteria and L. casei, plus carnitine chloride |
| BL powder/ヤクルトBL整腸薬 | 3 months | 1 g powder sachets; take with water or lukewarm water | Bifidobacteria and L. casei; no carnitine chloride |
Both have the same approved uses: regulating bowel movements, abdominal bloating, loose stools and constipation. The additional carnitine chloride in the chewable supports gastrointestinal function; it is not a marker that lets you declare the product stronger.

The chewable image identifies the retail bottle. It is not a photograph of the recalled three-tablet sample.
Three times daily after meals, with different age-based doses
Chew the tablets or allow them to dissolve in the mouth; take powder with water or lukewarm water. Every quantity below is per dose, not a daily total.
| Age | Chewable tablets per dose | Powder per dose |
|---|---|---|
| 15 years and over | 3 tablets | 1 sachet |
| 8–14 years | 2 tablets | 1/2 sachet |
| 5–7 years | 1 tablet | 1/2 sachet |
| 3 months to under 5 years | Do not use | 1/3 sachet |
| Under 3 months | Do not use | Do not use |
Children’s powder doses use half or one third of a sachet. If unsure how to measure that, ask a pharmacist to demonstrate using the product. Do not substitute a guessed fraction of a chewable tablet for a child below its labelled age.
Why not simply choose the larger bacterial figure?
At the adult daily dose, nine chewable tablets contain 45 mg of bifidobacteria, 60 mg of L. casei and 120 mg of carnitine chloride. Three powder sachets contain 150 mg of each bacterial ingredient. These are ingredient masses in different formulas, not proof that powder is more effective or a ratio for converting doses yourself. Choose by symptoms, age and form.
When to stop: the intervals differ
Stop immediately if there is no improvement after about two weeks with the chewable, or about one month with the powder, and consult a doctor, pharmacist or registered medicine seller with the leaflet. These are not required courses to complete: seek help earlier for worsening symptoms, warning signs or a reaction after use.
After opening: desiccant and leftover powder
In the chewable bottle, the tablet-like item wrapped in paper is desiccant and must not be swallowed. At first use, remove and discard the transport packing material that protects tablets from damage, then close the cap after use. The desiccant and transport packing have different jobs; neither is a dose.
Use powder promptly after opening. If a sachet is divided for a child’s dose, fold over its opening, keep the remainder in a cool, dry place, and use it within two days. This is a rule for divided powder sachets, not an opening-date limit for the chewable bottle.
Keep both away from direct sunlight and moisture in a cool place out of children’s reach. Do not transfer to another container or use expired products. Retaining the box and leaflet also makes it easier to check the name, expiry date and lot.
My order is: check age, then choose chewable or powder. The shared BL name does not make the products interchangeable for a child. Match the full name and the per-dose amount together.
Three-tablet sample recall: lots and contact details
The recall begun on 18 September 2026 covers specified lots of three-tablet samples of ヤクルトBLチュアブル整腸薬. The reason is that active-ingredient content may fall below the approved specification within the expiry period. It does not list every BL product or the retail 126-tablet bottle as recalled.
