Emal (エマール) is a detergent for delicate clothing. Before choosing a fragrance, check whether the garment can be washed in water, then confirm the washing method and detergent dispenser. “Neutral” or “for delicates” on a bottle cannot decide the method for every garment.

I’m Irene, a Taiwan-born, Japan-licensed pharmacist working in a Japanese drugstore. This guide explains Japanese product labels so you can check whether a product suits your needs before buying.
Official information checked October 23, 2026 (Japan time). This guide identifies two Japanese 460g bottles. No cleaning-performance, shrinkage or fragrance comparison was performed.

Distinguish detergent, softener and refills
洗たく用洗剤(おしゃれ着用) means laundry detergent for delicate clothing. The formal product category is synthetic laundry detergent, with neutral pH. Kao states that Emal does not contain fabric softener; adding softener is a separate step if you want it.
洗剤 means detergent, while 柔軟剤 or 柔軟仕上げ剤 means fabric softener. Do not put Emal in the softener compartment. Check the machine manual for the correct dispenser. 本体 identifies the bottle; つめかえ用 identifies a refill.
| Fragrance name | Net weight | JAN barcode number |
|---|---|---|
| リフレッシュグリーンの香り Refresh Green | 460g | 4901301453563 |
| アロマティックブーケの香り Aromatic Bouquet | 460g | 4901301453594 |
The 460g figure is net weight, not 460mL. Individual wash doses are measured in millilitres. Read the actual label for an older pack, a different quantity or a refill rather than applying this identification table automatically. Fragrance is not a cleaning-performance ranking, and this guide does not recommend a stronger scent to mask laundry problems.
Step 1: does the garment allow washing in water at home?
Read the garment’s care instructions (取扱い表示). A crossed-out wash tub means do not wash. The current bottle also says not to wash garments without care instructions. If the label is missing, unreadable or contradictory, ask the garment maker or a professional cleaner first.
Water-washable does not mean suitable for any machine cycle. Check hand-washing symbols, temperature limits, agitation, drying and written instructions together. Wool, silk or rayon cannot be judged by fibre name alone. Kao warns that silk and rayon labelled “do not wash” can shrink or change texture simply from contact with water.
Step 2: is the method or machine cycle suitable?
For machine washing, use an appropriate gentle cycle. Japanese names include おしゃれ着, 手洗い, ドライ and おうちクリーニング, but names and compatible garments vary by machine. Check its manual. A cycle labelled ドライ does not override a garment’s prohibition on washing in water.
Do not use Emal on the standard cycle. The current brand FAQ rules it out because of possible foam overflow. A durable garment does not remove this detergent restriction.
Step 3: distinguish water volume, clothing weight and dose
| Method | Basis | Emal dose |
|---|---|---|
| Top-loader, gentle cycle | 30L water | 40mL |
| Drum-type washing machine, gentle cycle | 1.5kg clothing | 40mL |
| Hand washing | 4L water | 10mL |
The drum-type machine’s 1.5kg refers to clothing, not water. The current cap has 20mL and 40mL marks, with 40mL as the one-cap guide. Hand washing does not automatically mean a whole capful. When the calculated dose is one capful or more, Kao directs you to the machine manual or its detergent-dose display.
Do not put Emal in an ordinary laundry-detergent auto-dose tank. If the machine has a dedicated おしゃれ着洗剤 (delicate-detergent) tank, check that machine’s instructions before using it.
Check colour transfer and water temperature before washing
For an item already confirmed washable, Kao’s colour-transfer check is to apply undiluted Emal to an inconspicuous area, wait five minutes and press with a white cloth. Wash separately if colour transfers; dark items should also be washed separately. The test neither overrides a “do not wash” label nor guarantees that colour will never fade.
Kao recommends water at 30°C or below; follow any stricter garment limit. Hand wash with gentle pressing, not rubbing. Two rinses are recommended. Optional softener belongs in the final rinse, not premixed into the Emal bottle. Follow the garment and equipment instructions for spinning, reshaping and drying.
Handling and storage
- Use only for the stated purpose. Keep away from children and anyone at risk of accidental ingestion.
- Wash your hands afterwards. Wear household gloves if your hands are prone to irritation or when handling the undiluted liquid.
- Promptly wipe undiluted detergent off machine lids or other affected surfaces with water to avoid damage.
- If it freezes, let it return to room temperature as directed. Read the full precautions before use.
Decide whether to wash before deciding which bottle to buy
Garment permits water washing → suitable method and cycle → correct dispenser and dose → fragrance and pack. Pause to check anything uncertain. A delicate-clothes detergent can offer a suitable washing option, but it does not make every garment washable at home.
