For the Japanese Bioré UV Aqua Rich Airy Hold Cream, look for the 70 g silver-white tube on a blue-and-white backing card. It is a face-and-body sunscreen with SPF50+, PA++++ and a two-star Japanese UV water-resistance rating. Its soufflé-like texture may make daily application more appealing, but you still need enough product and regular reapplication.

I’m Irene, a Taiwanese pharmacist working in Japan. A sunscreen that feels comfortable is easier to make part of your routine. Let’s identify the right tube, then work through how to apply it, when to reapply and how to wash it off.
Identify the Japanese 70 g tube

- Japanese name: ビオレ UV アクアリッチ エアリーホールドクリーム.
- English identifier: Bioré UV Aqua Rich Airy Hold Cream.
- Size and barcode: 70 g; JAN 4901301463593.
Check Airy Hold carefully: similarly named Watery Hold products and overseas packs should not be assumed to be the same formula.
Start with texture and fragrance
Kao describes a soufflé-like cream that stays in place while dispensing, spreads over the skin and settles into a light-feeling film. If you prefer a cream to a runnier sunscreen, that is a useful reason to consider it. Your own comfort with its scent and ingredients matters too.
It has an Airy Floral fragrance, and the ingredient list includes ethanol and fragrance. Check the complete list if you have a known ingredient sensitivity. Kao specifically says not to use it on particularly sensitive skin. An allergy-tested claim does not guarantee that you will not react.
It can serve as a makeup base. The advertised improvement in skin clarity is a cosmetic makeup effect, not treatment of existing pigmentation. Its vitamin C derivative is included as a moisturizing ingredient, so the presence of vitamin C is not a reason to expect dark spots to disappear.
Where it goes in the morning, and how much to use
Finish your usual skin care on your face and neck, apply sunscreen, then continue with makeup if you wear it. Using this as your makeup base does not mean a small smoothing dab supplies enough sunscreen.
- Place enough cream on the area in small portions and spread it into lines.
- Use circular movements to distribute it, then smooth in one direction for even coverage.
- Apply evenly to exposed body areas too. Let it dry before dressing so the cream does not transfer directly onto fabric.
- Close the cap after use. Keep it accessible when you go out so reapplication is practical.
If some areas feel thick, redistribute the cream rather than reducing the whole application to a barely visible dab. Kao warns that too little product will not provide adequate sun protection.
Does two-star water resistance mean no reapplication?
No. Kao still instructs you to reapply after wiping away sweat, and to reapply frequently as directed. A comfortable film or a water-resistance rating does not tell you that the morning application remains sufficient all day.
Irene’s practical reminder: connect reapplication with wiping off sweat. That is an easier habit to remember while sightseeing than assuming the first application is still doing everything you need. “Airy” describes the feel; it is not permission to use less.
Washing it off: consider the rest of your makeup
The product is labelled as removable with soap. Kao’s detailed directions say to wash thoroughly with your usual suitable cleanser: facial cleanser or makeup remover for the face, and body cleanser for the body. If you have layered foundation, long-wear makeup or another sunscreen over it, follow those products’ removal requirements too.
A few precautions worth keeping with the tube
- Do not apply immediately after hair removal or to wounds, swelling, eczema or other abnormal skin.
- Stop and consult a dermatologist for redness, swelling, itching, irritation, pale patches or darkening during use, or after sun exposure following application.
- Avoid the eyes. If it gets in, rinse thoroughly and immediately.
- If it stains clothes, promptly work laundry detergent into the affected area and wash carefully. Avoid chlorine bleach because it may turn the stain pink or another colour.
- Keep away from heat, direct sunlight and places where children could swallow it.
Quick questions
Can I apply less when using it as a primer?
If you rely on it for sun protection, use enough and spread it evenly. A smoother-looking makeup base does not establish adequate sunscreen coverage.
Is it a fragrance-free choice?
No. It has Airy Floral fragrance. If you prefer fragrance-free products, choose with that preference in mind rather than expecting this one to be scentless.
