Asadaame AZ Gargle: Dilution, Uses and When to Stop

Asadaame AZ Gargle 100mL: dilution, uses and safety reminders Japan Drugstore Guides

Asadaame AZ Gargle is a concentrate that must be diluted before gargling. Its labelled uses are swelling of the mouth and throat, and cleansing the mouth. Do not use it undiluted or swallow the solution. Check the full product name and your intended use rather than relying on the brand or blue packaging.

Irene

I’m Irene, a Taiwan-born, Japan-licensed pharmacist working in a Japanese drugstore. This guide explains the AZ gargle label: its purpose, dilution and when to ask for advice or stop. It does not replace individual medical care.

Japanese official information checked: October 22, 2026. Product: 浅田飴AZうがい薬 100mL, JAN 4987206622778, a Japanese Class 3 OTC medicine.

Check whether this is the product you need

The pack lists sodium azulenesulfonate hydrate (アズレンスルホン酸ナトリウム水和物, water-soluble azulene), 0.5g per 100mL of concentrate. This is the amount in the bottled medicine, not a single-use dose or the concentration in a prepared cup.

The labelled uses are swelling of the mouth and throat, and cleansing the mouth. Do not interpret those uses as a claim to disinfect, prevent colds or prevent infection. If you want a product for a different purpose, ask a pharmacist rather than treating all gargles as interchangeable.

This liquid is also different from Asadaame Azulene CPC Drops (浅田飴アズレンCPCドロップ), which dissolve in the mouth. Their ingredient combination, uses and directions differ. The separate Asadaame medicinal-drops guide covers those products. Do not transfer their drop counts, age bands or daily schedules to this liquid.

Ask before use in these three situations

The pack says to consult a doctor, dentist, pharmacist or registered OTC medicine seller before use if you:

  • are receiving medical or dental treatment;
  • have previously had allergic symptoms from medicines or other substances; or
  • have severe erosion or ulceration inside the mouth.

If you use other medicines, show their names and this pack to the professional checking suitability. Being a gargle or a Class 3 medicine does not establish that it can be combined with every medicine.

How to dilute and gargle

  1. Prepare the solution when you are ready to use it. Remove the cap, tilt the bottle and put 10–13 drops (approximately 0.4mL) of concentrate into a cup.
  2. Dilute with approximately 100mL of water or lukewarm water. Always dilute: do not gargle with the concentrate or increase its strength.
  3. Gargle several times with the prepared solution so it reaches the mouth. Spit it out; do not swallow. Use the diluted solution promptly.
  4. Repeat this use several times a day, as the label directs. Several gargles within one session and several sessions per day are different instructions. Do not add another 10–13 drops for each mouthful.
The dilution to remember: 10–13 drops (about 0.4mL) of concentrate plus about 100mL of water or lukewarm water per use; several uses daily. The 100mL is the water quantity, not the amount of concentrate to use.

Children must use it under a parent’s guidance and supervision. This label does not specify a numerical minimum age; do not borrow age limits or child doses from another product. If a child cannot reliably gargle and spit out, ask a pharmacist first rather than giving the liquid as an oral medicine.

When to stop

  • Mouth irritation after use: this may be a side effect. Stop immediately and take the product to a doctor, dentist, pharmacist or registered OTC medicine seller for advice. Do not respond by making a stronger solution.
  • No improvement after 5–6 days: stop and take the product to one of those professionals. Do not keep extending self-treatment or increase the concentration.

The 5–6-day instruction applies to lack of improvement. It is not a reason to wait until day six after an adverse reaction. This guide cannot diagnose the cause of your swelling or choose an individual treatment.

Contains ethanol and must be kept away from fire

The listed additives are glycerin, l-menthol, ethanol and sodium citrate. This is not an alcohol-free product. Ask before use if you have a concern about any ingredient.

  • Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and fire.
  • Keep out of children’s reach.
  • Do not transfer to another container: this can cause misuse or affect quality.
  • Do not use after the expiry date. Keep the box with the bottle and reread it before use.
  • Dilute at the time of use and use promptly, rather than preparing a batch to store as a ready-to-use mouthwash.

Irene’s checking order: exact name and purpose, consultation needs, dilution, then the irritation and 5–6-day stopping rules. These checks are more useful than choosing by brand or colour alone.
