Buying a Pregnancy Test in Japan: dotest hCG vs LH and What Comes Next

Rohto official packages: hCGa Class 2 pregnancy tests in one- and two-test packs, and LH Class 1 ovulation-prediction tests in five- and ten-test packs. Japan Drugstore Guides

Looking for a pregnancy test in a Japanese drugstore? Check for 妊娠検査薬 and hCG, not just the dotest brand. The same brand also sells an LH ovulation-prediction test. They have different purposes and are not interchangeable.

If pregnancy is possible and you have abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding, seek medical advice promptly—even without a positive test. Severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, shoulder pain, marked dizziness or fainting need immediate medical attention. Do not wait for another home test. These symptoms do not establish a diagnosis, but they need assessment.

First: what are you trying to check?

Packaging examples show hCGa one- and two-test packs and current LH Stick Type five- and ten-test packs; this is not an effectiveness comparison or a personal testing schedule. LH is not a pregnancy test or contraception. Package detection claims, seconds and line diagrams do not make the two products’ procedures or interpretation interchangeable.

hCGa detects hCG in urine as an aid to checking for pregnancy, not a definitive diagnosis. LH testing detects a different hormone. When buying LH, explain your purpose, treatment and medicines to the pharmacist.

Do not use LH testing to establish pregnancy or for contraception; it cannot guarantee the day of ovulation. This guide does not teach LH test scheduling or interpretation. Its instructions are not interchangeable with hCG instructions. If receiving fertility treatment, consult your doctor before using either product.

hCGa: is it time to test?

This particular product is for testing from around one week after your expected period—not one week after sex, and not a rule for every brand. Urine from morning, afternoon or evening can be used. For irregular periods, its leaflet uses the previous cycle to estimate the expected date. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if timing is unclear; an estimate cannot rule out pregnancy.

Testing early, miscalculating dates or low hCG in early pregnancy can produce a negative result. The leaflet also lists ectopic pregnancy among situations where a negative can occur. A negative result does not rule out pregnancy or make symptoms safe to ignore.

Before buying: can you follow this product’s leaflet?

Read the full enclosed instructions, check expiry, and open the individual pouch only just before testing. Do not reuse a stick. Store out of children’s reach in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. If the product differs from the pictured pack, verify its full name rather than assuming the same instructions apply.

After collecting urine as instructed, recap, lay flat and read at about one minute; do not interpret after ten minutes. First check for a line at 確認, the control position. No control line means repeat with a new stick—not “negative.” With the control line present, even a faint reddish-purple vertical line at 判定 is treated as positive. This is not the LH line-darkness comparison. We do not diagnose or interpret readers’ test photographs.

hCGa: what to do after the result

After an hCGa result: positive, see a doctor promptly; negative with no period, retest or consult; no control line, repeat with a new stick. If pregnancy is possible with pain or bleeding, seek advice even if negative. Severe pain, heavy bleeding, shoulder pain, marked dizziness or fainting need immediate medical attention, without waiting to retest. Negative does not exclude pregnancy; positive does not confirm a normal pregnancy.
Next actions after reading hCGa according to its leaflet—not a test-line interpretation chart. Do not apply this to LH results. If pregnancy is possible and you have abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding, seek medical advice promptly even if the test is negative. Severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, shoulder pain, marked dizziness or fainting require immediate medical attention. Do not wait for another test.

After a positive result, seek a doctor promptly; line darkness cannot establish that a pregnancy is progressing normally. The leaflet advises retesting or consultation if an early negative or unclear result is followed by about a week without a period. This is not an instruction to wait a week when you have symptoms. A test without a control line is not a valid negative.

Treatment involving hCG can affect results. Discuss treatment-related uncertainty with your doctor rather than changing treatment yourself. The box’s “over 99%” claim concerns hCG detection—not confirmation of a normal pregnancy or a guarantee that a negative excludes pregnancy.

A sentence to show the pharmacist

「妊娠しているか確認するための、妊娠検査薬を探しています。排卵日予測検査薬ではありません。」
“I am looking for a pregnancy test, not an ovulation-prediction test.” Also explain your last period, expected period, symptoms and treatment; say when you are unsure.

This guide identifies Japan’s hCGa and current LH stick-type products using their official information. It does not replace the full pack instructions, pharmacist consultation or medical diagnosis.
