Buying HANA NOA Shower in Japan? Check whether the pack includes a device, recognise that 500 mL is the liquid bottle’s contents rather than one rinse, and check whether you should use it at all.
This guide is for residents and visitors buying and using the product in Japan. It covers only the Japanese ハナノアシャワー (HANA NOA Shower) kit: a nasal-washing device plus 500 mL of dedicated ready-made liquid. Labelled a general medical device in Japan under the sales name ハナノア b, it physically rinses the nasal passages. It is not a medicated nasal spray or a reason to replace medical assessment or treatment. Instructions for another nasal washer are not interchangeable. [1][2]

At the shelf: a kit or just replacement liquid?

First purchase: you need the device
Look for ハナノアシャワー and the contents description 洗浄器具+専用洗浄液 500mL. The brand name and “500 mL” alone do not tell you whether a device is included.
Already have Shower: you need replacement liquid
The refill checked here is ハナノア専用洗浄液 レギュラータイプ, the regular 500 mL dedicated wash. It is compatible with Shower but contains no device. Match the full product name and compatibility statement. [3]
A wrong-fluid warning: ハナノアデカシャワー専用原液 is Deka concentrate and must not go into the Shower device. This guide does not cover Deka operation or preparation. [1]
500 mL versus 50 mL: bottle contents versus a rinse
500 mL is the liquid bottle’s contents. The device’s 50 mL mark is for both nostrils combined, not 50 mL per nostril and not an instruction to use the entire bottle at once.
Use Shower’s dedicated ready-made wash, measuring it with the device’s 50 mL line. There is no dilution-water preparation step. Do not add water to stretch the bottle or improvise a replacement liquid. Avoiding mixing does not establish that the product is sterile, risk-free or suitable for everyone. [1][2]
Before use: “do not use” is different from “ask first”
Do not use in these circumstances
- Under seven years old.
- Difficulty swallowing food or drink: rinse liquid could enter the airways or lungs.
- Severe nasal inflammation or blockage. Do not try to overcome this by squeezing harder.
Receiving ear, nose and throat treatment? Ask your doctor before use
If you are in postoperative care, follow your treating clinician rather than starting a rinse based on this guide. It does not provide a postoperative waiting period or individual clearance. [2]
Turning seven is not permission to use it independently. Children aged seven and older still need a guardian present and the directions and warnings carefully followed. The exclusions above still apply. The brand’s mouth-exit HANA NOA model remains labelled unsuitable for children under 15; Shower’s age limit is not a rule for the entire brand. [2][4]
Separately, the FDA’s general nasal-irrigation advice says people whose immune system is not working properly should consult a healthcare professional before using any nasal-irrigation system. This is general guidance, not an additional contraindication claimed from Shower’s leaflet. [5]
The handling details that matter: orientation, pressure and release
Read the complete leaflet in your pack; the official PDF is listed below. These points highlight easily missed details, not a substitute method borrowed from another device. Shower is for the nose only, not the eyes or ears. [2]
- Check the tube and triangle marks. Fill with dedicated liquid to approximately the 50 mL line. Fit the nozzle cap with its tube attached, check that the tube points downward inside the bottle, and close fully so the △ and ▽ marks align.
- Use over a sink with your face slightly downward. Hold the side of the bottle marked ▽ upward. Fit the nozzle to a nostril and press the centre of the bottle to rinse both sides. Do not tilt your head back, force the liquid in or sniff it in strongly.
- Do not squeeze harder just to make liquid exit the other nostril. The leaflet says it can also leave through the same nostril or the mouth. Spit out liquid that reaches your mouth. Saying “ah” while rinsing is the manufacturer’s tip to make flow toward the ear less likely, not a guarantee against it.
- Remove the nozzle from your nostril before relaxing your grip. This sequence helps prevent backflow. Do not blow your nose hard afterwards; the leaflet warns that liquid entering the ear can lead to middle-ear inflammation.
The manufacturer gives one to three sessions a day as an approximate guide, not a personalised treatment plan or a reason to keep adding rinses when something feels wrong. [2]
When to stop and get help
If pain or another abnormality occurs during use, stop rather than forcing the rinse and consult a doctor with the package. A comfort claim on a box is not a reason to dismiss your symptoms. [2]
- An abnormality persists after swallowing rinse liquid: consult a doctor with the package. Do not assume every accidental swallow is harmless.
- Liquid remains inside the ear for a day or longer: the leaflet requires medical consultation with the package. This does not mean waiting a day if pain or another abnormality occurs.
- Liquid gets into an eye: do not rub; immediately rinse with running water. Consult a doctor with the package if an abnormality remains.
Separately, CDC’s general nasal-rinsing guidance says to seek medical attention immediately for headache, fever, confusion or vomiting after rinsing. These warning signs do not establish a diagnosis or a product-specific risk rate. [6]
Can you boil it clean? Follow this device’s care instructions
After use, remove the nozzle and tube, wash the device thoroughly, let it dry completely and store it somewhere clean. Shower’s instructions specify water only, without detergent. Do not wash with boiling-hot water or dry with high heat such as a hairdryer: damage or deformation can result. Do not import boiling, microwave or other disinfection methods from another device. [2]
Keep the liquid tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from sunlight, heat, humidity and children. Do not decant the bottle into another storage container or use expired liquid. Before buying for a trip, consider whether you can follow the cleaning, drying and storage instructions where you are staying. [2][3]
A three-point check before checkout
- Device: a first purchase needs the Shower device; the refill alone does not include one.
- Liquid: match the dedicated ready-made wash. The bottle holds 500 mL; the 50 mL device line is for both nostrils together.
- Suitability: check exclusions, obtain medical advice when needed, and make sure you can follow the handling and cleaning directions.
If you meant to buy a medicated nasal spray, check its ingredients, indications and directions separately. Physically rinsing the nose does not make this appropriate for every blocked nose or a replacement for your existing treatment.
