ELIXIR Wrinkle Cream ba: S, L and Refills in Japan

Two gold ELIXIR tubes can both contain 22 g, yet one is a complete tube and the other needs parts you already own. To choose the current Japanese Retinol Power Wrinkle Cream ba, start with your cap and inner plug, then check S 15 g, L 22 g or the L 22 g refill.

First purchase? Identify a complete tube, then choose 15 g or 22 g

All three are Japanese quasi-drugs, described by the maker as a localized wrinkle-care cream, with the registered name クリーム ba. Their currently published ingredient lists have the same contents in the same order. S and L identify the sizes, rather than two strength levels. Retinol and tranexamic acid are marked as active ingredients, but their concentrations are not disclosed. Do not read L as a stronger treatment.

Look at the caps, not just the gold tubes

A complete tube supplies the cap and inner plug you will keep for later replacements. For a first purchase, choose a complete tube in your preferred size; consider the refill once you have the ba parts.

The JAN numbers come from Shiseido’s official product data; check them against the barcode on your package. Do not identify the product by ELIXIR or a gold tube alone. The pink and beige daytime Tone Up emulsions are different products. The localized cream in this guide does not replace sunscreen.

The L refill fits a ba S tube’s parts, but not the old version

The current 22 g refill works with the cap and inner plug from either ba S 15 g or ba L 22 g. Using the S tube’s parts does not change the refill’s 22 g contents. The important match is the ba generation, not equal capacities. Shiseido says the previous version’s cap and inner plug are incompatible; buy a complete current-version tube for your first purchase.

At the shelf, find つけかえ用 near the top of the carton

Here, つけかえ用 means replacing the tube, not pouring cream into the old tube. You may also see a special 15 g S-size refill in the maker’s campaign materials. That is a non-retail gift, not a fourth regular retail option in this comparison. This guide does not cover campaign applications or offers.

Opening a complete tube for the first time

1. Remove the cap and discard the blue ring.

   

2. Place the cap straight onto the tube and screw it down until the ridged section at the base is no longer visible.
3. Remove the cap again; the inner plug is now fitted.

   

Replacing the tube: keep the cap and inner plug

1. Remove the cap from the used-up complete tube.
2. Lift the base of its inner plug, turn it counterclockwise and remove it.

   

3. Insert the inner plug straight into the cap, tip first.

   

4. Remove the small cap supplied on the refill tube.
5. Insert the refill tube straight and turn it clockwise until the ridged section at the base is no longer visible.

   

To help prevent cream from coming out during assembly, Shiseido specifically says to complete step 3 before attaching the refill. Do not lift the inner plug’s base during normal use; remove it only when changing tubes. If you cannot identify the parts, check the diagrams on the official product page rather than forcing together parts from an uncertain version.

Use it last in your routine, and follow the starting schedule

The regular directions are to use a small pearl-sized amount at the end of morning and evening skin care, gently applying it to areas of concern such as around the eyes and mouth. After morning application, use a cosmetic with UV protection. This amount is for localized wrinkle care, not for sunscreen coverage of the whole face or body.

• First use, or when skin is sensitive: the maker recommends nighttime use only, at intervals of two to three days for the first two weeks, followed by every night for the next two weeks.
• Do not increase the amount on your own: follow the labelled amount and frequency and watch your skin’s response.
• Other retinol products: do not use several together all at once. Use one product at a time while observing your skin, as the maker advises.

Do not miss the eyelid, neck and skin-reaction cautions

• Previous problems with retinol, or a tendency to develop skin problems: avoid use. Do not treat irritation as proof that the product is working and keep going.
• Eyes: do not apply to the eyelids, and avoid getting it into your eyes.
• Neck: follow the same precautions when first using it there. If it caused problems on your face, avoid using it on your neck.
• Skin changes: stop if skin abnormalities appear after sun exposure. If a problem occurs on the face or neck, stop using it on that area.
• Allergy testing: tested does not mean that nobody can develop an allergic reaction.

All three published ingredient lists include ethanol and fragrance. If you have a known ingredient allergy, check your package against the maker’s full list; switching between S, L and refill does not establish that you have avoided the ingredient. Shiseido notes that ingredients and packaging may change, so check the actual product you have.

Close it properly and make your shopping note specific

• Wipe the tube opening clean after use and close the cap firmly.
• Keep it away from direct sun, high temperatures and humidity, and out of young children’s reach.
• Keep your ba cap and inner plug if you plan to buy the refill.
