Azuki no Chikara Eye vs Face Warmer: Choosing and Heating Them in Japan

Whole packages of Azuki no Chikara eye and face warmers, compared by area of use Japan Drugstore Guides

Two red boxes, one familiar Azuki no Chikara name—but do you want the eye warmer or the face version? Larger coverage is not a strength rating. Start with the area you want to warm and whether your microwave can follow the specified settings. These are warming products for a break while awake, not masks to sleep in.

First, does this kind of warming break suit you?

Neither product is a medical device. This guide explains selection and handling, not treatment for eye or skin conditions.

  • Do not use on anyone unable to remove the product themselves, on children, while heavily intoxicated, or while sleeping. Plan to stay awake throughout use.
  • If you have diabetes, impaired heat sensation or circulation, or delicate skin, consult a doctor or pharmacist before use because of the risk of burns.
  • Do not apply over injured skin, eczema, irritation, burns, sunburn or other skin abnormalities, areas that are hot or feverish, or mucous membranes. The face product also specifically excludes areas with acne.
  • If anything abnormal occurs, stop immediately and consult a dermatologist or another appropriate healthcare professional. Do not continue just to reach a set time.

Read the Japanese name, then choose the area

The eye product is あずきのチカラ 目もと用 and is for the eyes only. The face product is あずきのチカラ フェイス蒸し and is for the face only; its shape extends over the forehead, facial outline and under the chin. The difference is coverage—not an effectiveness ranking you can read from the size.

フェイス蒸し: for the face

Both are bean-filled products heated in a microwave. The different fillings are not a strength scale. The practical detail to remember next is that the lettered side faces opposite ways during heating and use.

In the microwave: lettered side up

Take the product out of its clear bag. Do not heat the enclosed oxygen-absorber packet. Wipe dirt from the microwave interior; if it will not come off, use a clean microwave-safe plate. Let a warm microwave interior cool first, as it can make the product hotter than expected. Distribute the beans evenly, leave the product unfolded, and place it in the centre with the lettered side up.

Both products use the same settings: choose the matching row
Microwave outputEye warmerFace warmer
500W40 seconds40 seconds
600W30 seconds30 seconds

Do not use an output above 600W or exceed the specified time. Use only the microwave function—not other heating functions or automatic modes, including automatic reheating (オート/おまかせ). Do not use a commercial microwave. Do not calculate your own settings for other wattages. If your machine cannot follow the table, do not heat the product in it.

If the microwave has a turntable, check that it is rotating. Stay beside the microwave while heating so you can stop immediately if scorching, sparks or another abnormality occurs. These preparations help prevent scorching, fire and burns; they are not optional shortcuts.

Check the heat, then turn the lettered side towards your skin

Be careful of the product’s temperature when taking it out. If it feels hot, do not force yourself to handle it: let it cool sufficiently before removing it.

If キケン! appears, do not use the product. The word means “danger”. Check the surface of the eye warmer, or the hatched area shown below for the face warmer. Let it cool until the lettering disappears before use. It can appear even after the correct heating time, depending on the microwave and surroundings. Using the product too hot may harm the eyes; the face product also warns of harm to the skin. Disappearing lettering is not a reason to ignore excessive heat—the cooling precaution still applies.

Face warmer forehead end, chin end and skin-contact side
On the face version, おでこ側 marks the forehead end and あご側 the chin end. The hatched area is the side that touches the skin.

For use, turn it over: lettered side down. Place the eye warmer over the eyes. For the face version, remove makeup first and match the forehead and chin ends to your face. Close your eyes and remain awake with either product. About 10 minutes is a guide; do not leave it against the same area for a long time. Stop if anything abnormal occurs—10 minutes is not a target to endure.

Reusable does not mean ready for another heating straight away

Do not add a top-up heating. Leave at least 4 hours before the next heating. The interval is between heating sessions; moving it to another area does not make immediate reheating appropriate.

Why not heat it again straight away? The manufacturer’s FAQ explains that consecutive heating can sharply reduce the beans’ moisture, making the product abnormally hot and creating a risk of ignition or fire. Reusable does not mean suitable for consecutive heating.

With repeated use, the beans become less able to retain enough moisture. They may become harder to warm and more prone to scorching. Do not exceed 250 uses; discard the product once you have completed 250 uses. Conditions and surroundings may make it unusable sooner. Stop if you notice anything abnormal, even before 250 uses, and do not use a scorched or torn product. The number is a limit, not a promise that every product will last for all 250 uses.

Store it in a cool, well-ventilated place. It cannot be washed and is not edible. The bean filling does not make it food, and the fabric cover does not make it a washable sleep mask.

For dirt, wipe with a well-wrung-out cloth rather than washing the product. The beans can spoil if they get wet, which is why the whole warmer must not be washed.

Follow local waste-sorting rules when disposing of it. The Japanese official pages list the box as paper packaging, the bag as plastic packaging, the oxygen absorber as non-burnable waste, and the warmer itself as general burnable waste. Ask your municipality if unsure rather than applying this list universally in every location.

Before buying, picture the break—not just the red box

  • Do you want warmth over the eyes, or coverage extending over the forehead and facial outline? Find 目もと用 or フェイス蒸し rather than treating size as strength.
  • Do you have a suitable microwave at home or your accommodation, with manual 500W/40-second or 600W/30-second settings, and can you stay beside it while it heats?
  • Can you stay awake, allow cooling and at least 4 hours before reheating, and manage a product that cannot be washed? If those conditions do not fit, choosing neither is reasonable.

Choose the area first, then remember “lettered side up to heat, down to use”. That turns two similar red boxes into two distinct routines. Keep and read the instructions supplied with the product you buy, too.
