Bioré u Hand Soap in Japan: Regular Pump vs Paw-Print Stamp

Whole bottles of Bioré u regular foaming hand soap and paw-print foam stamp, showing the side nozzle and top plate Japan Drugstore Guides

The white bottles and blue pumps can look very similar on a Japanese drugstore shelf. Look at where the foam comes out: the regular Bioré u pump dispenses into a hand held under its nozzle, while the paw-stamp version needs your palm on top. Both hold 240 mL. The pump shape gives you the useful clue to how you will use them at the sink.

Japanese official information checked: October 25, 2026. This guide compares the regular foaming pump and paw-stamp version sold in Japan, with the matching 430 mL refill as an identification example.

Both are 240 mL: start with the pump and Japanese name

Regular pump: look for 泡ハンドソープ and the small nozzle

Look for the projecting nozzle and 泡ハンドソープ on the front.

The front says 泡ハンドソープ, meaning foaming hand soap. Check the full name and 240 mL size to distinguish the pump bottle from a refill. This comparison uses the mild-citrus version, not every fragrance or the automatic dispenser.

Paw stamp: look for 泡スタンプ and にくきゅう

Bioré u 240 mL paw-stamp hand soap with round pump head
Look for the broad round top and 泡スタンプ on the bottle; confirm にくきゅう in the product name.

にくきゅう means paw pads. The broad top transfers shaped foam onto the palm placed above it. If that is the dispensing style you want, match these words and the pump shape.

Wet your hands first, then use the movement for your pump

Start by wetting your hands under running water to rinse away surface dirt. For the paw stamp, shake off excess water before pressing. If your hands are dripping wet, the foam may not stick well or form a neat paw. You do not need to dry your hands completely to make the shape.

Regular pump: receive the foam beneath the nozzle

Keep the bottle standing on a stable surface and use it without shaking. Hold a hand under the nozzle and dispense an appropriate amount, about one pump according to the directions, then spread the foam to wash.

Paw stamp: palm flat, press fully down, then lift away

Before the first use, prime the pump by pressing it 3–4 times. When you are ready to receive the paw-shaped foam, place your palm flat over the top, push all the way down, then lift your hand away promptly. Do not press twice in succession.

Kao’s introduction to using this pump gives around age four and up as a guide. That is an operating-age guideline, not a guarantee that every child of that age can wash their hands safely on their own.

Receiving the foam is the start of washing. Spread an appropriate amount over your hands and wash your palms, backs of your hands, between your fingers, around your nails, thumbs and wrists, in that order. Rinse with water or warm water. Enjoy the paw shape, then carry on through the washing and rinsing steps.

For refills, match ビオレu 泡ハンドソープ つめかえ用

Both bottles use the specified ビオレu 泡ハンドソープ つめかえ用 refill. The example here is the matching mild-citrus 430 mL refill. This is a refill bottle, not a pump that dispenses foam directly.

Bioré u 430 mL foaming hand soap refill bottle
Look for 泡ハンドソープ and つめかえ用, then match the pump bottle’s product name.

The “2.2回分” on this package is the manufacturer’s refill-count label. It is based on one refill being approximately 80% of the pump bottle’s stated content volume. Follow the fill-level mark on the side of your bottle: do not pour the whole 430 mL refill into a 240 mL bottle.

Clean, refill and reassemble in the official order

  1. Remove the pump, rinse the inside of the bottle with tap water and drain it.
  2. Wash the whole pump with tap water.
  3. Turn the pump upside down and press the head to expel all liquid from its air chamber.
  4. Add the refill with the matching product name, stopping at the fill-level mark on the side of the bottle.
  5. Shake water off the pump, fit it back onto the bottle and press a few times.

If changing fragrance, use up the original soap and wash the bottle and pump thoroughly before refilling. Do not substitute other hand-wash products or ordinary liquid soap.

Do not dilute it with water. According to Kao, dilution affects the intended cleansing performance and makes the foam looser and less lasting. Diluted liquid is also more liable to deteriorate and should not be stored. Use the foam as it comes from the pump.

Foam collecting on the paw-stamp head? Rinse the top

If foam collects on the paw-stamp head, rinse the head directly with water, then shake the water off. Kao states that water does not enter the bottle when cleaning it this way. The blue ring and plate at the top can also be removed for washing.

Both soaps list a bacteria-killing active ingredient. The brand’s “antibacterial pump head” claim refers separately to the pump material: it is not effective against all bacteria, and the head still needs to be kept clean. The paw shape is not a way to judge which soap cleans more strongly, nor is forming the shape proof that handwashing is complete.

Check your skin and where you keep the bottle

  • Do not use if you have eczema, dermatitis (such as rash or eroded skin), or other skin disorders.
  • Stop using it and consult a dermatologist if a rash, irritation or another abnormal reaction occurs. Continued use may worsen symptoms.
  • If it gets into your eyes, rinse thoroughly straight away.
  • Choose a storage location that helps prevent accidental swallowing or other incidents involving children, people with dementia or others at risk.

These ingredient lists include ethanol, so do not choose them as alcohol-free products. Check the name, directions and precautions on the package you buy and use.

Picture one handwash before choosing: if you prefer to receive foam under a nozzle, look for the regular pump. For foam transferred onto your palm from above the head, look for 泡スタンプ. Understanding where your hands go, how to finish washing and which refill name to match makes the bottle easier to use once you get home.
