Buying クッキングシート at a Japanese drugstore? A pack mentioning an appliance type is not the whole answer. The appliance and the mode you intend to use must permit it too. A product’s compatibility statement does not override a prohibition in the appliance instructions.
This is a pre-purchase decision guide, not a universal compatibility chart for plastic wrap, foil and baking paper. It does not give substitution, cutting or food-wrapping instructions. If you cannot establish suitability for your intended use, put that purchase or use on hold rather than buying something to experiment with.
1. Identify the function, not just the appliance name
電子レンジ (microwave), オーブン (oven), グリル (grill) and オーブントースター (toaster oven) are not interchangeable intended-use labels. Some appliances offer several heating functions. Calling yours an オーブンレンジ, a combination microwave/oven, does not establish that the same sheet or wrapping material is suitable in every mode.
Japan’s NITE safety guidance explains that restrictions can change with the heating mode of a combination appliance and calls for checking both appliance and product precautions. Before shopping, note the appliance brand, model and exact function you plan to use. In accommodation with a kitchen, ask the operator if you cannot identify the mode or obtain instructions; do not guess.
2. Read the full product name and restrictions—not just “heat resistant”
クッキングシート (cooking/baking paper), フライパン用ホイル (foil products for frying pans) and ラップ (plastic food wrap) are different product names. Similar long boxes or cooking-related words do not make their contents substitutes for one another.
Check the exact product’s intended appliances, restrictions and precautions. A heat-resistance figure is not permission for every heating function. Do not transfer one product’s conditions to another brand or another item in its range. This guide omits temperatures and times because an isolated number cannot establish the complete conditions for your setup.
For example, Asahi Kasei’s クックパー クッキングシート page lists oven and microwave uses, but also states that safety is not guaranteed for all models and includes a requirement to follow appliance instructions. That is information about this product, not a shared compatibility rule for every cooking sheet.
3. If the product permits it but the appliance prohibits it, do not use it
Check the product and appliance instructions for the same intended use. If either prohibits it, do not use it. If information is missing, unclear or inconsistent, hold off on buying or using it for that purpose. Checking both sets of conditions is not a safety guarantee; follow the complete instructions.

For a concrete example, Kureha’s Rakucho クッキングシート page gives toaster-oven conditions and a warning about burning, while noting that safety is not guaranteed for all appliance models. Zojirushi’s safety notice for its toaster ovens, meanwhile, explicitly lists cooking sheets among items not to use.
The two statements address different scopes. They do not establish that every toaster oven prohibits cooking sheets, or that following the sheet manufacturer’s conditions permits use in Zojirushi’s appliances. Check your exact product, appliance and intended function. This guide does not repeat the conditional operating instructions or offer a workaround for prohibitions.
What to have ready when asking
When asking the relevant manufacturer, have the full product name, photos of package precautions, appliance brand and model, and intended function ready. Do not test compatibility by heating a small amount. Previous uneventful use does not replace the current instructions.
Checking both sets of conditions is not a safety guarantee from this guide. Continue to follow the complete instructions during use. We have not inspected every physical package, batch, appliance model or accommodation. Cooking procedures, substitute recommendations and incident-response instructions are outside this guide.
