IHADA UV Milk or Face Protect Powder? How to Choose and Layer Them

IHADA Japan daytime guide: UV Milk 30 mL and Face Protect Powder 9 g, for morning base, finishing and touch-ups Japan Drugstore Guides

Start with the 30 mL IHADA UV Milk if you need facial sunscreen that also works as a makeup base. Look at the 9 g Face Protect Powder if you already have sunscreen and want a finishing or touch-up compact. You can use them together, but you do not need both. A light dusting does not guarantee the powder’s labelled SPF40, and the two SPF values cannot be added.

Irene

I’m Irene, a Taiwan-born, Japan-licensed pharmacist working in a Japanese drugstore. Before comparing these two, I’d ask where the gap is in your routine: a morning sunscreen base, or something to tidy your makeup later? That makes the shelf much easier to navigate.

Both current Japanese products are quasi-drugs. This guide focuses on daytime UV care and makeup, rather than treating IHADA’s moisturizing balms as interchangeable alternatives.

Choose the missing step in your routine

Face Protect Powder

If you already enjoy your sunscreen, the compact can be a separate purchase for your makeup bag. If your morning sunscreen step is still missing, settle on sufficient, even application and reapplication before deciding whether to add a powder.

UV Milk: look for 30 mL and TONEUP UV

The full Japanese name is イハダ 薬用フェイスプロテクトUVミルク. The bottle reads IHADA TONEUP UV, and the official shade is クリアベージュ, Clear Beige. This is a tinted facial UV milk that can also serve as a makeup primer.

Shiseido describes a naturally luminous finish that makes uneven tone, visible pores and the appearance of redness less noticeable. Those are makeup effects, rather than treatment for the cause of redness. The same tint will not necessarily look identical on every skin tone.

How to apply the UV Milk

Official Shiseido illustration: spread UV milk evenly over the face with the fingers
  1. 1Shake wellThis is a two-layer formula. Shake it well before each use.
  2. 2Apply after skincareTake a suitable amount in your palm and spread carefully and evenly over the whole face. The current directions do not specify a number of drops or a coin-sized amount.
  3. 3Reapply when neededReapply as necessary after sweating or wiping with a towel. UV water resistance ★★ does not mean one morning application needs no further attention.

Because it has a tint, it can be tempting to use only small concealer-like dots. Shiseido specifically warns that using too little reduces the UV protection you obtain.

Face Protect Powder: 9 g, a compact and a puff

Current Japan IHADA Medicated Face Protect Powder 9 g, full carton, open compact and puff; official Shiseido image

The full name is イハダ 薬用フェイスプロテクトパウダー. It is a pressed face powder in a mirrored compact with a puff. The Japanese official name has no N suffix; match the full name and 9 g size when shopping.

The manufacturer describes a powder that absorbs sweat and sebum, reduces shine and stickiness, and softly blurs pores. The official photograph shows a beige-toned pan, but the official product information does not provide a foundation-style shade range. Someone else’s application photo cannot guarantee the same result on your skin tone.

Take a suitable amount on the puff and glide it evenly over the face. Use it after makeup or for daytime touch-ups. Shiseido does not specify a fixed number of puff strokes or layers, so there is no supported “two swipes equals SPF40” shortcut.

Keep the UV caveat with the compact: the maker warns that too little powder gives insufficient UV protection and recommends pairing it with a UV-protective makeup base. A light touch-up to improve the finish does not establish that you have fully renewed the sunscreen underneath.

A practical morning-to-afternoon order

  1. 1Morning skincareFinish the skincare that suits you. If you are comparing moisturizing pots, see IHADA Balm and Clear Balm; those are separate products from this UV Milk.
  2. 2UV MilkShake and apply evenly. Add foundation afterwards if it is part of your makeup routine.
  3. 3Powder, if wantedApply with the puff to finish your makeup. This step is optional; owning the milk does not mean you need the whole range.
  4. 4Check again outdoorsAfter sweating or wiping your face, consider sunscreen reapplication as well as makeup touch-ups. They solve related but different practical needs.

SPF50+ plus SPF40 does not become SPF90+, or give a combined number of hours you can stay in the sun. Even when layering, apply each product evenly and respond to sweating and wiping.

Similar active ingredients, different formulas

  • UV Milk: the listed active ingredient is tranexamic acid, トラネキサム酸.
  • Powder: the actives are tranexamic acid and stearyl glycyrrhetinate, グリチルレチン酸ステアリル. The latter is not dipotassium glycyrrhizate.

Both contain highly purified petrolatum as a moisture-barrier-protecting ingredient. In the Japanese labelling, the brightening claim means suppressing melanin production to help prevent dark spots and freckles. It does not promise to erase existing pigmentation. The quasi-drug category and skin-roughness or acne-prevention claims do not make these treatments for eczema, dermatitis or inflamed acne.

The powder is labelled free from UV absorbers; the milk contains UV absorbers. Do not apply the powder’s Japanese “non-chemical” description to the entire IHADA brand. Both are fragrance-free and formulated without ethanol or parabens, but those features alone cannot rank them by universal gentleness.

Allergy testing and a formulation designed to be less likely to cause acne do not guarantee freedom from allergy, breakouts or irritation for every user. Check the complete ingredients if you have a known allergy, and seek advice about current redness, itching or rashes rather than repeatedly trying products on unsettled skin.

Removal at night and care for the puff

The powder itself is labelled removable with soap. Shiseido’s official product pages do not specify a removal method for the UV Milk, so that claim should not be extended to it. If you want to cleanse with face wash alone, confirm the milk’s removal method with Shiseido before buying. Foundation or other makeup may also have its own removal requirements; choose cleansing for the full routine and follow the remover’s directions.

A dirty puff can harden the powder surface and make it harder to pick up. Gently press-wash the puff in lukewarm water with diluted mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, remove excess water, and let it dry completely in the shade. Avoid dropping the compact or storing it in heat, humidity or direct sunlight.

  • Keep UV Milk out of your eyes; rinse immediately if it gets in. Wipe the bottle opening, close the cap firmly, and keep it away from flames and young children.
  • If the milk gets onto clothing, wash promptly with detergent. Avoid chlorine bleach, which can turn the stain pink.
  • Stop if skin abnormalities develop during use or after sun exposure. Seek dermatology advice for marked or persistent redness, swelling, itching or irritation rather than continuing to reapply.

Is the 9 g refill a third formula?

Japan IHADA Medicated Face Protect Powder 9 g refill and full carton; official Shiseido image

レフィル means refill. This 9 g refill includes a puff and has the same published full ingredient list as the 9 g compact version. It is a refill option for the same powder, rather than a third formula to compare. If you do not already have the matching compact, distinguish the complete unit from the refill before buying.

My shopping shortcut: choose the gap in your day. For UV Milk, remember shaking, even application and reapplication. For Powder, remember a suitable amount, a clean puff and the limits of a light touch-up. A routine you can use properly matters more than buying both products.
