The name is the first surprise: Curél’s Japanese Lip Care Cream is a stick, while Lip Care Balm comes in a jar. Both are untinted 4.2g quasi-drugs for preventing rough, chapped lips. The useful question is how you want to apply them: directly from a stick, or with a finger or lip brush, rather than choosing by size or assumed strength.

I’m Irene, a Taiwan-born pharmacist qualified in Japan.
The same 4.2g size, but different application formats
In this Japanese range, リップケア クリーム (Lip Care Cream) is the stick, while リップケア バーム (Lip Care Balm) comes in a jar. Check the complete name and container rather than relying on the English word “cream”. The tinted cosmetic lip products are outside this comparison.
On a phone, scroll inside the table. JAN codes are product identifiers to help you check the version.

Both list stearyl glycyrrhetinate (グリチルレチン酸ステアリル) as an active ingredient, and both are fragrance-free, colourant-free and free of added ethanol. A shared active ingredient does not make their full formulas or textures identical. These labels do not guarantee that nobody will experience irritation or an allergic reaction. The official pages below provide the full ingredient lists.
Cream on the pack means the stick

Stick: twist up 2–3mm, apply gently, then retract
- Twist up 2–3mm and use a light touch. Kao’s demonstration starts by touching the stick to the lips to warm and soften it, then applying in gentle vertical strokes from top to bottom.
- Work from the corners towards the centre, adding another pass in the centre, then gently bring the lips together to spread it evenly.
- The stick is soft: do not extend it by 5mm or more. Excessive winding up and down can also cause the product to crumble.
- After use, retract the stick to the container opening and close the cap firmly.
These instructions are for the stick. The 2–3mm extension is not an amount to measure out of the jar.
Balm on the pack means the jar

Jar: a finger or lip brush, with a bedtime-care positioning
Take a suitable amount with a finger or lip brush, spread gently over the lips and close the cap firmly afterwards. Kao’s finger-application demonstration uses about two grains of rice in size: spread over the lower lip, then the upper lip, working from the corners towards the centre. After covering the lips, close the mouth and use the finger pad to make gentle spiral movements from the corners towards the centre, then follow the lip outline. Use gentle downward strokes on areas prone to roughness or chapping.
Kao positions the balm as rich care before bed. That describes a routine; it does not make this a night-only product or a stronger treatment than the stick. Choose the container and application you prefer. There is no need to buy both simply to create a day-and-night pair.
Five use and storage precautions shared by both
- Keep away from high temperatures and direct sunlight.
- Wipe around the mouth before applying, for example after a meal.
- Do not use on wounds, eczema or other abnormal areas.
- If redness, itching, irritation or another problem develops, stop and consult a dermatologist. Continuing may worsen symptoms.
- Keep out of the reach of babies and young children.
These five precautions apply to both products. If there is a wound or discomfort, do not simply switch from the stick to the jar and keep trying. This is a lip-care shopping guide, not a guide to treating cheilitis, angular cheilitis or wounds.
My buying check: application first, then the complete name
For gentle direct application followed by retracting and capping, look for リップケア クリーム. For finger or lip-brush application as part of a bedtime routine, look for リップケア バーム. Both contain 4.2g; the jar is not a treatment upgrade just because its format differs. If your pack has a different name or label, check that version rather than transferring this table to it.
