If you usually apply an emulsion after toner, a Japanese drugstore shelf has a small surprise: this CareCera bottle says 先行, meaning it goes first. It is used just after washing your face. The nearby refill pouch also holds 130 mL, but it does not give you a pump bottle to start with. Read the order, then recognise the container, and the choice becomes much clearer.

“Pre-emulsion” tells you where this one belongs
The full Japanese name is ケアセラAP 高保湿先行バリア乳液. It is classified in Japan as a cosmetic for facial moisturising. Rohto directs you to use it immediately after washing your face. If toner is part of your routine, this emulsion comes before it. That order belongs to this product; it is not a reason to move every emulsion you own to the first step.
Rohto describes eight types of natural-type ceramides as moisturising ingredients. The penetration claim on the packaging is limited to the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin. The useful buying question is whether you want this post-cleansing moisturising step, rather than a medicine to treat eczema or heal a wound.
Do not use on areas with wounds, swelling, eczema or other abnormalities. Check your skin before adding skincare. A “low-irritation” label is not a reason to apply it over an abnormal area.
| Clue on the pack | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ポンプ / green pump | 130 mL bottle | Look here if you are buying it for the first time and need the pump bottle |
| つめかえ | 130 mL refill pouch | Check the full name against the bottle you already have |
| 先行乳液 | An emulsion used straight after cleansing | It comes before toner, if you use toner |

Starting with a bottle: find the green pump and 先行バリア乳液

The bottle holds 130 mL. Read CareCera, AP and 高保湿 先行バリア乳液 together rather than relying on the green colour or brand name alone; the range includes other emulsions.
Already have the bottle? Look for つめかえ in yellow

The refill also holds 130 mL and belongs to the same pre-emulsion. These are bottle and refill formats, not two strengths. Before buying the pouch, check that your bottle is ケアセラAP 高保湿先行バリア乳液. Follow the instructions on the actual refill pack when refilling.
Want to check the barcodes?
The bottle’s JAN is 4987241195206; the refill’s is 4987241195237. Both hold 130 mL, but their barcodes differ. The Japanese sales name for both is ケアセラモイスト乳液.
Separate first-use priming from your usual two pumps
When first opening the bottle: remove the stopper, then press the pump several times until the emulsion comes out. This gets the pump dispensing; it is not a fixed number of presses to measure a normal application.
Here is a short routine organised from Rohto’s directions and use-order FAQ:
- After washing your face, dispense the emulsion first. Take the instructed amount, two pumps, into your palm.
- Gently spread it over your whole face. Smooth the emulsion over the facial skin.
- Continue with the skincare you need. Rohto’s FAQ allows toner, serum, emulsion or cream afterwards. You do not have to buy and layer every item on that list.
If you use toner, the short version is: wash your face → this pre-emulsion → toner and your later skincare. Put this product in its intended place, then arrange later steps according to your needs and each product’s directions.
Keep these precautions alongside the “low-irritation” label
The dedicated product page reports patch testing with participants who have sensitive skin, and allergy testing. Patch testing does not guarantee freedom from irritation for everyone, and allergy testing does not guarantee freedom from allergic reactions. These labels are not a promise that anything you apply afterwards will be irritation-free.
- Avoid abnormal areas: do not use on wounds, swelling, eczema or other skin abnormalities.
- Watch for skin changes: pay close attention to your skin during use. If redness, swelling, itching, irritation, loss of colour such as white patches, darkening or other abnormalities occur during use or with sunlight exposure after use, stop and consult a dermatologist or other appropriate medical professional. Continuing use may make symptoms worse.
- Keep it out of your eyes: if it gets into your eyes, rinse immediately. Consult an eye doctor if any abnormality remains.
- Store carefully: avoid high or low temperatures and direct sunlight, and keep out of reach of infants and young children.
Two questions before taking it home
Do you want this extra moisturising step after cleansing? And do you need a pump bottle, or a refill for this exact bottle you already own? There is no need to buy another product just because it says “pre” if you do not want that step. If you do choose it, match the full name, packaging format and place in your routine rather than comparing volume alone.
