FANCL Calorie Limit: Original, Otona or Premium?

Actual packages of FANCL Calorie Limit, Otona and Premium Japan Drugstore Guides

Your Japan food list is growing—and FANCL Calorie Limit has appeared on your shopping list too. At the drugstore, you find light green, dark green and gold packs. Even the “30” on the front looks similar. Choose by what changes in the formula and daily serving, not by colour or the word Premium.

Enjoy the food trip. Know what the supplement actually offers.
I’m Irene, a Taiwanese pharmacist working in Japan. I’ll help you compare the three packs without turning a simple purchase into a science lesson. They are foods with function claims in Japan, not weight-loss medicines or a way to erase the calories in ramen and desserts.

Three-minute choice: which functions are you looking for?

カロリミット
Mainly interested in meal-related functions

Original: カロリミット

Three functional ingredients focus on reducing absorption of meal sugars and fats, and limiting post-meal rises in blood glucose and triglycerides. Start here if these are the functions you want to compare.

大人のカロリミット
Also interested in fat metabolism

Otona: 大人のカロリミット

Adds black-ginger-derived polymethoxyflavones, with reported functions related to fat metabolism, use of fat and reduced abdominal fat in people with a higher BMI. “Otona” means adult, but the original is not for children either.

プレミアムカロリミット
Also comparing weight and bowel functions

Premium: プレミアムカロリミット

Adds rosehip-derived tiliroside and plant-derived lactic-acid bacteria K-1, linked to weight/abdominal-fat support for people with a higher BMI and improved bowel movements. The serving is 4 tablets once daily.

These are manufacturer-reported function claims, not a ranking of strength or a promise of personal results. All three contain crab-derived ingredients and are not to be taken by children or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The original has no “大人の” at the start. Look for those characters on Otona, and “PREMIUM” or “プレミアム” on Premium. A saved photo of the full pack is more useful than “the green one” when shopping for someone else. Packaging and pack sizes can change, so also check the tablet count and serving directions.

Ingredient differences that explain the choice

Ingredient / amount basisOriginal: 3 tablets per servingOtona: 3 tablets per servingPremium: 4 tablets per day
Mulberry-leaf iminosugars1.75 mg1.75 mg1.75 mg
Chitosan100 mg100 mg100 mg
Tea-flower saponins0.85 mg0.85 mg0.85 mg
Black-ginger-derived polymethoxyflavones12 mg12 mg
Rosehip-derived tiliroside0.1 mg
Plant-derived bacteria K-1 (L. casei 327)50 billion

The original already includes the shared meal-related ingredients. Otona and Premium add other functions. Black ginger does not mean everyone needs the Otona product as they get older. The rosehip-related claim in Premium concerns people with a higher BMI; the manufacturer specifies BMI 25.0 to under 30.0 for its abdominal-fat and weight-support note. That cannot be extended to a weight-loss promise for everyone.

Premium’s bowel-movement claim relates to K-1 bacteria. Its ingredient list specifies a inactivated bacterial powder. The “50 billion” figure alone cannot establish that it is stronger than a live-bacteria intestinal regulator or that Premium is the best choice for you.

Serving sizes: “30 servings” does not always mean 30 days

ProductSuggested amountPack shown in the photo
Original3 tablets per serving, 1–3 times daily90 tablets = 30 servings (30回分)
Otona3 tablets per serving, 1–3 times daily90 tablets = 30 servings (30回分)
Premium4 tablets once daily120 tablets = 30 days (30日分)

For Original and Otona, a 90-tablet pack lasts about 30 days at one serving a day, or about 10 days at three servings a day. That is a pack-size calculation, not advice to take the maximum. Premium is once daily; do not copy the other products’ three-times-daily limit.

Before or after food? Do not invent a minute-by-minute rule

FANCL’s current FAQ says supplements are foods and generally do not have a fixed time of use. Choosing a regular occasion, such as a meal, can help build a habit. The official FAQ does not require taking it exactly 30 minutes before eating or say that taking it after food is useless. Follow the suggested amount on your pack; do not double it because you forgot a serving.

Check these points before buying

  • Crab allergy: all three contain crab-derived chitosan. The listed allergen is “かに” (crab). Switching to the original or Premium does not avoid it.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding or children: FANCL says not to take any of these three products. The original is not a children’s version.
  • A medical condition or regular medicines: ask a doctor or pharmacist whether the supplement is suitable. Do not use it instead of treatment for blood glucose, blood lipids or weight-related conditions.
  • New symptoms after use: stop and seek professional advice.

“Foods with Function Claims” is a Japanese food-labelling system. The manufacturer submits supporting information under its own responsibility. The functions and safety are not individually evaluated by the government, and these products are not medicines. Balanced meals still matter; “now I can overeat without consequences” is not a sound reason to buy them.

Your purpose

You may not need the extra functions

Compare whether the added ingredients match your needs. A longer ingredient list or higher price does not automatically make a better fit.

Make the buying decision lighter, then get back to your trip.
I would start by choosing one type and understanding its directions. There is no need to buy the whole set. Enjoying a meal, being mindful of portions and leaving time for walks are useful habits to take home too; the supplement only offers support within its stated function claims.

Questions before you buy or use it

Which Calorie Limit is strongest?

The names and number of ingredients do not establish a strength ranking. Original focuses on meal-related functions, Otona adds black-ginger-related functions, and Premium adds rosehip- and bowel-related functions. Compare needs, eligibility and serving directions; Premium is not automatically best for everyone.

Does it cancel out calories or prevent weight gain?

No. It should not be understood as cancelling calories or guaranteeing that you will not gain weight. These are foods with function claims, with specific limits to those claims, and they do not replace balanced meals or medical treatment.

Can I combine the three types?

FANCL allows use at different meals according to your needs, not together at the same meal. The total limit across products is three occasions per day, with Premium limited to once daily. You do not need to buy all three to start.

Must I take it 30 minutes before a meal?

FANCL’s current FAQ does not set that rule. It says supplements are foods and generally do not have a fixed time of use; a regular occasion such as a meal can help you remember. Follow your pack’s suggested amount.

Does the number 30 mean a 30-day supply?

Not always. The pictured 90-tablet Original and Otona packs contain 30 servings of three tablets. At three servings daily, that is about 10 days. The 120-tablet Premium pack is 30 days at four tablets daily.
