One Iris CL-I Neo vial is for one use, not one day. You may use the same vial for both eyes at that sitting, then discard it even if solution remains. The Japanese directions are 2–3 drops per dose, 3–6 times daily. Open a fresh vial for each use.

I’m Irene, a Taiwanese pharmacist working in Japan. Throwing away a partly full vial can feel wasteful. With this product, that leftover liquid is expected: understanding when to discard it matters more than squeezing out every last drop.

Find the right Japanese box
This guide covers Taisho Iris CL-I Neo (アイリスCL-I ネオ), a Japanese Class 3 OTC tear-substitute eye drop in a box of 30 single-use vials. Look for the complete name, not just “Iris”.
A box labelled “プレミアム うるおいケア” (Premium Moisturizing Care) or “抗菌” (antimicrobial) is a different product. Similar single-use packaging does not make their ingredients or uses interchangeable.
Open, apply and discard
- Twist the top off slowly. Do not pull hard or open it abruptly: the liquid may splash.
- Apply the stated 2–3 drops per dose. One vial can serve both eyes of the same person at one sitting. Keep the tip away from your eye, eyelids and eyelashes, and never share a vial.
- Discard the vial and remaining liquid after use. It contains some extra solution to make dispensing easier. You do not need to empty the whole vial into your eyes.

The manufacturer’s diagram identifies the container as plastic for sorting. Follow your accommodation’s or local waste-disposal rules when travelling. Do not transfer leftover drops into another container.
What it is for, and what preservative-free means
The Japanese indications cover discomfort while wearing hard or soft contact lenses, tear supplementation for dry eyes, tired eyes, and blurred vision associated with excess eye discharge. This is not the antimicrobial Iris product; discharge alone is not a reason to use it as treatment for an infection.
- Taurine 1.0%: supports the eye’s nutritional needs and helps relieve tired eyes.
- Sodium chloride 0.56% and potassium chloride 0.113%: compounds found in tears, used to supplement insufficient tears.
- Other ingredients: sodium bicarbonate and a pH-adjusting agent.
Neo contains no preservatives and no menthol cooling agent. Preservative-free does not mean allergy-proof, suitable for unlimited dosing, or safe to keep after opening. Follow the dose and discard-after-use instructions.
Can I use it with contacts, including coloured lenses?
The manufacturer lists soft, disposable, oxygen-permeable and hard lenses as compatible with use while wearing them. Its Neo FAQ also says it can be used regardless of contact-lens type. People who do not wear contacts can use it too.
For coloured contact lenses: Taisho’s guidance for Neo covers all contact-lens types. Follow your own lens instructions as well. If their restrictions are unclear, show a pharmacist or eye-care professional both the lens brand and this box. Do not borrow a rule from another Iris product or another eye drop.
Children and when to seek advice
The Japanese insert gives no numerical minimum age and requires adult guidance and supervision for children. Taisho’s FAQ permits use in young children and identifies Neo as having little cooling sensation. That is not a reason to self-treat every eye symptom in a small child. Children may struggle to explain what is wrong: arrange an earlier eye examination if symptoms persist or worsen, rather than waiting two weeks.
Ask a doctor, pharmacist or registered OTC seller before use if you are receiving medical treatment, have previously had an allergic reaction to a medicine or similar substance, have severe eye pain, or have been diagnosed with glaucoma.
- Stop immediately and seek advice if you develop a skin rash, redness or itching, or red, itchy or swollen eyes. Take the insert with you.
- Stop and seek advice if blurred vision does not improve, or symptoms have not improved after about two weeks. This is not an instruction to wait through pain or worsening symptoms.
Store unopened vials carefully while travelling
Keep them somewhere cool, out of direct sunlight and out of children’s reach. Do not leave them in a hot car or on its dashboard. A back trouser pocket can put pressure on the top and accidentally open it. Do not use expired drops or cloudy solution. These are eye drops, not contact-lens cleaning, soaking or storage solution.
Frequently asked questions
Can I save it if I only treat one eye?
No. Whether you use it in one eye or both, discard everything left after that use.
Does a 30-vial box last 30 days?
The box contains 30 single-use doses. Using drops several times in one day uses several vials; do not spread one open vial across the day.
Should I choose eye drops by their cooling sensation?
Start with the symptom and the exact formulation, including contact-lens instructions. If you are comparing pink eye drops, see the separate Lycee versions and contact-lens guide. A brand or stronger cooling sensation does not establish stronger treatment.
