Choosing KATE Lip Monster in Japan? Start with the format, not the shade number. Choose the original stick if you want familiar direct application; consider Souffle Matte if you want a soft matte look and an applicator for blurring the lip edge. These are different products, not simply different packaging.

I’m Irene, a Taiwan-born pharmacist working in a Japanese drugstore. A shelf of similar black tubes can make shade popularity seem like the only decision. This guide instead uses Japanese official information to compare product identity and handling. It is not my wear test or a full shade review.
Japanese official information checked: October 21, 2026. “Original” here means リップモンスター without another product suffix. This guide compares it only with スフレマット; the wider range also includes Q, ツヤバース and クリアトーン, among others.
Choose the format and finish first
For familiar stick application
ケイト リップモンスター / Lip Monster

A stick lipstick. KATE promotes colour payoff, moisture and colour retention. Start here if your practical priority is continuing with a familiar lipstick format. Its moisturising claim does not make it a treatment for cracked lips.
Check the label: read リップモンスター and the complete shade code—not just KATE or the black case.
For a soft matte, blurred edge
ケイト リップモンスター スフレマット / Souffle Matte

KATE describes a liquid lip colour that changes to a soft matte texture, with an applicator designed to blur the lip outline. Consider its format and official finish images if that is the look you want.
Check the label: look for スフレマット / souffle matte. The complete example code is M05; keep the M.
Both images are official Japanese product images for identification. Screen colour is not a colour-match guarantee; these are not our own photographs or evidence of personal use.
05 and M05 are not a cross-range colour match
Original 05 is ダークフィグ (Dark Fig); Souffle Matte M05 is 泥霧. Different range names, shade names and formats mean the shared number does not establish equivalent colour. The examples demonstrate identification—not suitability for a skin tone or an on-lip comparison.
Handling differences worth knowing
- Original: extend about 5mm; extending too far can break the stick. Close the cap after use. Do not borrow another range’s extension instruction.
- Souffle Matte: wipe your lips before applying after meals. After use, wipe the applicator before returning it, clean the container opening and close the cap securely.
- Allow time after application: KATE says to wait a little. We do not invent a fixed number of seconds or turn colour-retention claims into a promise of zero transfer.
Which one survives a full meal better? This guide has no controlled wear comparison and cannot rank them on that basis. Choose the format and finish first, then decide whether the handling routine fits you.
Old limited-edition coverage is not a stock list
Old limited-edition coverage does not establish current stock. Take Souffle Matte EX-2 as an example. Kao Japan now states that production ended on November 21, 2024, with sales ending as store stocks run out. Older coverage can help clarify your preferences, but does not establish present availability in Japan. EX-2 is therefore not a current shopping example here; no store stock is promised.
If your lips react, stop testing colours
- Do not use on wounds, eczema or other lip abnormalities, or if the product does not suit your lips.
- Stop if redness, swelling, itching or irritation develops and consult a dermatologist; continued use may worsen symptoms.
- Avoid heat and direct sunlight. Store away from children and others at risk of accidentally swallowing it.
The practical order: stick or soft-matte liquid → full product name and shade code → handling instructions. You do not need both just because both are popular.
