Japanese product, supplied instructions and official FAQ checked: 2 November 2026. This guide identifies the 150 mL Earth Shiramitori Lotion, not the brand’s medicated shampoo or household spray.
How can an “insecticide-free” lotion still kill head lice? This is not ordinary hair oil. Its active ingredient is 4.0% dimeticone (dimethylpolysiloxane), which acts physically against head lice. There is another important detail: although the pack says it works on eggs, the instructions still require three applications at the specified intervals. One application is not a guarantee that everything has gone.
When choosing this kind of product, I separate how it works, how it must be used, and when to stop treating yourself. An ingredient also used in hair care does not make a silicone hair oil a substitute. Nor does the absence of conventional insecticidal ingredients remove the precautions.

Identify the purple-and-silver 150 mL box first
The full Japanese name is アース シラミとりローション; its registered sales name is アースシラミとりローション. It is a Japanese pest-control quasi-drug (防除用医薬部外品), indicated for head-lice eradication. The photograph shows the current official 150 mL packaging example—not シラミとりシャンプーα or the シラミ・ダニ退治スプレー intended for household items.
The product originally launched in 2021, with refreshed packaging shipped from 3 February 2025. It is not a newly invented 2026 formula. “Premium type” is wording on the pack, not a ranking of every lice treatment.

A physical action—not the conventional insecticide route
The manufacturer explains that the lotion coats lice and eggs. Dimeticone forms a coating that restricts movement and obstructs the lice’s respiratory and excretory organs, preventing water excretion and killing them. That is more specific than simply saying “it cuts off oxygen”; it describes this formulated product used under its labelled conditions.
“No insecticidal ingredients” and “contains an active ingredient for lice eradication” are therefore not contradictory. This is not a phenothrin, pyrethroid-based product. The manufacturer also describes activity against head lice resistant to that type of insecticide. However, visible material left on hair after treatment does not let you diagnose resistance, increase the amount or combine products yourself.
A shared ingredient name does not establish the same formulation, concentration, indication or directions. Ordinary silicone hair oils, cooking oils and other dimeticone-containing products are not substitutes. Physical action is not a guarantee of no risk to people.

Read “works on eggs” together with “three applications”
The instructions explain that some eggs may still hatch, which is why treatment must be repeated three times. Apply once on a treatment day and leave two to three intervening days without this product. The leaflet illustrates a two-day gap with applications on days 1, 4 and 7. Do not borrow another lice product’s number of applications, interval or wet-hair instructions, and do not add daily applications.
Ordinary shampoo and conditioner may be used on the non-treatment days. Eggs and empty egg cases can remain firmly attached to hair and need combing out with the supplied comb. Visible specks alone do not establish live lice, dead eggs or a need for more product.
The pack’s wording about preventing recurrence does not mean protection from later infestation. The official FAQ says this treats lice currently on the hair; it has no subsequent repellent or preventive effect. Do not use it as routine preventive hair care before school, travel or possible contact.
The practical details are not optional fine print
The key arrangements below belong together. Read the complete illustrated instructions supplied in the box, including the cap, headband and spill-protection preparations; the mechanism illustration is not an application tutorial.
- Start with dry hair, not pre-wetted hair. Wet hair can reduce the effect. Prepare a cape or towel, a towel you do not mind staining, tissues, a clock, washing products and newspaper or similar floor protection. If keeping clothes on, choose front-opening clothes you do not mind staining. Remove glasses, contact lenses and accessories. The lotion may stain clothes or furniture and makes floors very slippery.
- Wear the supplied headband on the forehead, keeping it off the hair as far as possible to help keep lotion out of the eyes. Remove the round cap and fit the pointed cap; hold its black section and remove only the white lid. Distribute lotion evenly to the hair roots and throughout the hair, lifting the band where necessary so the hair it touches also receives lotion.
- The approximate amount is 25–50 mL per application. Keep it out of the eyes, ears, nose and mouth and wait five minutes. Do not extend contact time yourself to seek a stronger effect. No smoking or nearby flames during use.
- Rinse thoroughly with water or lukewarm water, then wash with ordinary shampoo. If residue still bothers you, shampoo a second time. Wash your hands after use and close the bottle firmly. Follow the stated intervals for three applications, not daily use.
- Use the wide side of the supplied two-way comb to detangle, then its narrow side to remove eggs or empty cases. Combing may be done on dry hair or wet hair after washing. Follow the instructions to soak the used comb and headband in water at 55°C or above for at least five minutes, then dry before reuse; water at 80°C or above can deform the comb. This is equipment cleaning, never an instruction to apply hot water to the scalp. Take care to avoid scalds.
Do not wait for application three if something goes wrong
- Do not use on a scalp or application area with eczema, irritation, rash or erosion. This product is for head lice; do not import directions for treating other body areas.
- Stop immediately and consult a doctor for allergic symptoms such as rash, redness, itching or dermatitis after use.
- If lotion enters an eye, rinse immediately with water or lukewarm water. If symptoms do not improve after rinsing, stop and consult a doctor immediately. Consult a doctor immediately if a large amount is accidentally swallowed.
- After three properly spaced applications without improvement, stop and consult a doctor. Do not start another course yourself or assume resistance and add another product.
- Children must use it under a parent or carer’s guidance and supervision. “Recommended for children” is not permission for unsupervised use or a blanket assurance for every age and scalp condition.
- Hair colour, particularly products such as hair manicure, may dissolve and run, causing fading or stains. Keep lotion away from food, tableware and toys, and prevent slippery-floor falls.
Store in a cool place away from sunlight and flames, out of reach of children and people who require supervision. Do not transfer it to another container or add tap water or other liquids. Follow local disposal requirements.
Bring useful details—not just “which is strongest?”
Bring the products or photographs of what has already been used, the application dates and number of uses, any reactions, and the user’s age and scalp condition. A pharmacist or doctor can help assess the next step rather than relying on the appearance of attached material to change treatment yourself.
If your pack is Sumithrin L medicated shampoo, read that product’s directions. Its ingredient and treatment arrangements differ. This link helps identify the product; it does not recommend combining treatments or switching on your own.
Take three distinctions back to the shelf: a formulated lice treatment is not ordinary hair oil; egg activity still comes with a repeated-treatment schedule; and removing existing lice does not guarantee protection from future infestation.
