ROSETTE Clay Face Washes: Sea Mud, White Clay or Acne Clear?

Rosette Sea Mud Smooth, White Clay and Acne Clear 120 g tubes. Japan Drugstore Guides
Irene

I'm Irene, a Taiwanese-born, Japanese-licensed pharmacist working in a Japanese drugstore. ROSETTE's coloured tubes can look like a choice between clay colours, but the more useful question is what you want from your everyday face wash.

Choose by wash feel, fragrance and purpose

Consider green Sea Mud Smooth for a fresh, smooth cleansing finish; pink White Clay for a moisture-focused, fragrance-free option; or blue Acne Clear for a fragranced medicated wash labelled to help prevent acne and skin irritation. These are three different propositions, not a strongest-to-weakest ranking.

What you wantJapanese name to matchCategory and sizeFragrance and maker-described feel
Wash away excess sebum and old surface skinロゼット洗顔パスタ 海泥スムースCosmetic; 120 gFragrance-free; springy foam and a fresh, smooth finish
Moisture-focused cleansingロゼット洗顔パスタ 白泥Cosmetic; 120 gFragrance-free; soft cushion-like foam and a hydrated-feeling finish
A medicated preventive face washロゼット洗顔パスタ アクネクリアQuasi-drug; 120 gGreen-herb fragrance; fine, creamy foam

These descriptions come from ROSETTE, rather than a personal wash test. The comparison covers the standard Japanese 120 g tubes pictured below; do not assume every larger pouch, mini tube or older package has an identical formula.

Green: Sea Mud Smooth for a fresh cleansing finish

Sea Mud Smooth combines a clay cleansing ingredient, 含硫ケイ酸Al, with moisturising rose-fruit extract. ROSETTE describes resilient foam that carries away excess sebum and old keratin. This makes it a useful starting point if your main shopping question is everyday pore-dirt cleansing and you prefer no added fragrance.

The brand's references to dark pore dirt concern old keratin. They do not establish permanent pore shrinking. Its ingredient list includes ethanol, so fragrance-free should not be read as alcohol-free, ingredient-free or suitable for every reactive skin type.

Pink: White Clay is a moisture-focused choice

The pink tube is labelled 白泥, meaning white clay. The name refers to the clay, not the colour of the tube. Look for the Japanese name 白泥 on the current tube.

Its formula contains kaolin, amino-acid-based cleansing ingredients and three hyaluronic-acid moisturising ingredients. ROSETTE describes soft, cushioning foam and positions this wash for dryness-prone, sensitive-feeling skin. For someone choosing by wash feel rather than a stronger cleansing claim, that is the meaningful difference from the green tube.

It is fragrance-free and has undergone sensitive-skin patch testing. The maker says irritation can still occur. A sensitive-skin label is not a guarantee, and it is not a reason to continue using a wash that stings or causes a reaction. Both fragrance-free tubes can have an odour from their raw ingredients.

Blue: Acne Clear is a fragranced quasi-drug

ROSETTE Acne Clear, Japanese 120 g tube

Acne Clear contains the active ingredient stearyl glycyrrhetinate, plus two highlighted clay cleansing ingredients and moisturising plant extracts. Its Japanese category is 医薬部外品, or quasi-drug. Its preventive acne/skin-irritation positioning is different from an OTC acne-treatment medicine.

The current tube explicitly identifies a green-herb scent, and its ingredient list includes fragrance. If avoiding added fragrance is your priority, this is not the option to select. ROSETTE describes a fine, creamy lather; the blue colour does not mean stronger cleaning or a better choice for every breakout.

For persistent, painful or worsening acne, a face-wash comparison cannot determine the treatment you need. Ask a pharmacist or dermatologist rather than repeatedly switching cleansers in search of a cure.

Lather, wash and rinse: these are not clay masks

The exact product pages give the same use instructions for these three 120 g tubes:

  1. Put approximately 1 cm of the product in your palm.
  2. Add water or lukewarm water and work it into a good lather.
  3. Wash gently with the foam, using a light massaging motion.
  4. Rinse thoroughly so that no cleanser remains.

Do not turn a foaming wash into a leave-on clay mask. ROSETTE's size estimate uses morning and evening applications of about 1 cm, approximately 1.5 g each, for roughly 40 days from a 120 g tube. That is a consumption estimate, not a promise of how long your tube will last or an instruction to wash more frequently.

These three are face washes, not the brand's makeup-removing cleanser. Follow your makeup and sunscreen's removal instructions; a clay label alone does not mean it removes every long-wearing product.

Precautions worth keeping with your travel routine

Do not use on wounds, swelling, eczema or other abnormal areas. Watch your skin during use. Stop and consult a dermatologist if redness, swelling, itching, irritation, loss of pigment or darkening occurs during use or after sunlight exposure; continuing may worsen the reaction.

Avoid the eyes. If cleanser gets in, rinse immediately without rubbing; consult an eye doctor if a foreign-body sensation remains.

Close the cap firmly. Keep out of infants' reach and away from extreme heat, extreme cold and direct sunlight. Do not leave the tube in a bathroom while a bathroom dryer is operating, and use promptly after opening. The colour of Sea Mud Smooth and Acne Clear comes from their ingredients. The checked product directions do not specify a minimum age or pregnancy-specific instructions; that absence is not an individual suitability assessment.

A simple shelf decision

Choose your priority first: a fresh smooth finish, moisture-focused cleansing, or a fragranced medicated preventive wash. Then match the Japanese name and current package, and check the ingredient list for anything you already know you need to avoid.

ROSETTE's current clay family also lists Deep Black, Shower Cleanse, Ghassoul Bright and Red Wrinkle. The round sulfur-series pots are a separate range, so do not transfer their directions to these tubes. If you are comparing a tube with a different travel format, the suisai cleansing-powder guide is a natural next comparison.
