fino Hair Mask vs Hair Milk vs Hair Oils: Japan Guide

Four current Japanese fino packages: hair mask, hair milk, rich hair oil and Airy Smooth oil Japan Drugstore Guides
Irene

I’m Irene, a Taiwanese pharmacist licensed in Japan and working in a Japanese drugstore. With these similar fino packages, my first question is simple: do you want something to rinse out, or something to leave in?

Choose the step before the finish

  • Want the familiar red-lidded silver jar? Choose the 230g Hair Mask and rinse it out after shampooing.
  • Want leave-in moisture with a light, non-sticky feel? Consider the 140mL Hair Milk.
  • Prefer an oil finish? Compare the 70mL rich oil for smoothness and control with the lighter-feeling 70mL Airy Smooth oil.

This guide covers four current Japanese-market fino products. The comparison follows the manufacturer’s finish descriptions; your hair, the amount used and your routine can change how each product feels. The milk began its Japanese rollout on 26 August 2026; it is a separate product from the oils.

Read the product name, not just the red cap

The English labels here describe the products; the Japanese names below identify the exact range being compared. Overseas names, sizes and directions can differ. These are hair-care cosmetics, not medicines.

1. Hair Mask: the rinse-out jar

230g

Use after shampooing: gently squeeze out excess water, work the mask through damaged areas, then rinse. The current brand page’s semi-long-hair guide is about 1–2 muscat-grape-sized portions. A 700g refill is another size option, not a fifth product in this comparison.

FineToday says you can rinse immediately after distributing it. There is no mandatory five-minute wait. Its conditioning claims concern replenishing moisture and oils that damaged hair can lack.

2. Hair Milk: lightweight leave-in moisture

フィーノ プレミアムタッチ 浸透美容液ヘアミルク
140mL

The milk is designed to balance moisture with a light, non-sticky finish. FineToday highlights a conditioning complex of Ceramide NG, cocamidopropyl betaine and DPG. Consider this positioning if dry-feeling ends bother you but a heavy finish does not appeal. Feel will still vary between users.

Prime the pump until product appears. Spread it between your palms, then through towel-dried, damp hair, focusing on the ends. The guide is 3–4 pumps for semi-long hair. Dry-hair use is also allowed. Leave it in.

3. Rich Hair Oil: a smooth, controlled finish

フィーノ プレミアムタッチ 濃厚美容液ヘアオイル
70mL

Whole Japanese fino Premium Touch rich hair oil 70mL bottle with red cap and silver body
Rich hair oil 70mL: look for HAIR OIL and the red cap. Image: FineToday Japan.

The Japanese description, まとまるタイプ, points to a smoother, more manageable finish. Check HAIR OIL and 70mL so you do not confuse its red cap with the milk.

Apply to towel-dried or dry hair, first spreading it over your hands and then focusing on the ends. Start from the product’s one-pump guide for semi-long hair and adjust. The manufacturer’s heat/friction protection claim refers to a physical protective effect, not immunity from heat damage. Its usage FAQ also describes a small application to dry hair after styling for shine.

4. Airy Smooth Oil: a lighter oil finish

70mL

Whole Japanese fino Airy Smooth hair oil 70mL bottle with pale cap and pink-gradient body

Look for the pale cap, pink-gradient bottle and AIRY SMOOTH wording. FineToday describes this as the lighter, silkier option, さらさらタイプ. Both oils have the same Grace Floral fragrance.

Use at the same stage as the rich oil, but follow this bottle’s guide: from two pumps for semi-long hair, adjusted to your hair. A lighter finish does not establish weaker conditioning performance.

A simple routine: rinse first, then choose a leave-in

  1. After shampooingIf using the mask, squeeze out excess water, distribute it and rinse.
  2. Towel-dryIf you want leave-in care, choose the milk or one oil according to the finish you prefer.
  3. Distribute and dryLeave the milk or oil in. Each also allows dry-hair use.

This is a simple shopping starting point. You do not need all four products or a compulsory milk-then-two-oils routine.

Questions before buying

Can I use the mask daily? Do I need conditioner too?

The current Japanese FAQ allows regular or special-care use according to hair condition and preference. Another official FAQ says it can replace conditioner. Daily use is optional. Follow any specific amount or frequency printed on your own package.

Why do some listings show different names or sizes?

A 2021 FineToday release called the mask 浸透美容液ヘアマスク; today’s Japanese brand page calls it 濃厚美容液ヘアマスク. Regional versions can also differ. This guide uses the current Japanese 230g mask, 140mL milk and two 70mL oils. An older photograph alone does not establish that a product is counterfeit or discontinued.

Does “repair” mean permanent restoration?

This is a cosmetic-care comparison about conditioning, smoothness, shine and protection. Manufacturer repair claims are not promises of permanent restoration or damage-free hair. For another leave-in range, see my guide to five Japanese LUCIDO-L 60mL oils.

What should I watch for when using or storing them?

Avoid the eyes; rinse immediately with water or lukewarm water if contact occurs, without rubbing. Avoid use on irritated or damaged skin and stop if discomfort develops. Clean spills to prevent slipping. Keep the milk out of the bathroom, direct sunlight and high temperatures; keep oils away from flames. Check your bottle’s carrying and shipping precautions before travel.

My shopping order: step, finish, then the label

Choose the mask for a rinse-out step. For leave-in care, decide between the milk, the smooth rich oil and the lighter Airy Smooth oil. Save the full name and size for your next purchase, rather than only remembering a red cap.
