Choosing between BOTANIST Moist and Smooth in Japan? Start with the finish you prefer, then check whether the bottle says SHAMPOO or TREATMENT. Moist is the option to compare for a more moisturized, manageable finish; Smooth is the option to compare for a lighter, silky finish. These are shopping directions, not guaranteed outcomes for a particular hair type.

Hi, I’m Irene, a Taiwanese pharmacist licensed in Japan and working in a Japanese drugstore. This guide turns Japanese product labels into a practical buying checklist so you can avoid mixing up ranges, shampoo and treatment. It is not a hands-on wash test.
Japanese official information checked October 22, 2026. Scope: the standard Botanical Shampoo Moist and Smooth—not seasonal scents, collaboration packs, ROOTH, SANTAL or WELLP.
Choose a preferred finish, not a rigid hair-type label
MOIST: for a more moisturized, manageable finish

BOTANIST positions Moist toward a moisturized, manageable finish, including for people concerned about dryness or hair that tends to puff out. Treat that as a starting point for your preferred feel—not a promise that it will suit everyone with dry ends.
Japanese shampoo name: ボタニスト ボタニカルシャンプー モイスト. The standard shampoo fragrance is apricot and jasmine; the treatment fragrance is apple and berry.
SMOOTH: for a lighter, silky finish

BOTANIST positions Smooth toward a light, silky finish, including for hair that tangles easily. “Light” does not mean an oil-control treatment or a guarantee of volume for fine hair.
Japanese shampoo name: ボタニスト ボタニカルシャンプー スムース. The standard shampoo fragrance is green apple and rose; the treatment fragrance is apple and berry.
Finish this sentence before shopping: “I want my hair to feel more ____ after washing.” If your answer is moisturized and manageable, start with Moist. If it is light and silky, start with Smooth. If you want both, you do not need to buy both bottles: choose your current priority, then check the scent and size.
Similar bottles, different labels
| Check | Shampoo | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Bottle wording | SHAMPOO シャンプー | TREATMENT トリートメント |
| Standard bottle | 460mL | 460g |
| Regular refill | 400mL | 400g |
| Official silicone information | Silicone-free | Contains silicone |
A silicone-free shampoo claim therefore does not apply to the entire shampoo-and-treatment pair. Silicone presence alone is not a reason to rank overall safety or performance. Both shampoos are fragranced, not fragrance-free.
A smaller trial or a refill?
Both official range pages list a travel set with 45mL shampoo and 45g treatment. A smaller pack can limit the amount you commit to before deciding whether you like the scent and finish. It does not guarantee local availability or a lower cost per millilitre.
For bottles and refills of the same shampoo, calculate actual price ÷ volume × 100 to compare cost per 100mL. A 400mL refill and a 460mL bottle are not equal quantities. Do not mix treatment weights or the total price of a shampoo-and-treatment set into that shampoo-only comparison. If buying a refill first, consider whether you have the appropriate container.
When taking an older recommendation or a Taiwanese product name to a Japanese store, write down the full Japanese name, SHAMPOO and the size. A familiar BOTANIST logo does not establish that an older formula, seasonal fragrance or another market’s pack is identical.
Use and refilling: treatment is not a second shampoo
The official routine is to wet the scalp and hair thoroughly with lukewarm water, lather an appropriate amount of shampoo and rinse thoroughly from the scalp. Apply treatment afterwards, mainly through mid-lengths and ends, then rinse; do not leave treatment on the scalp. Adjust quantity for hair length, amount and dirt rather than adding more simply to chase foam.
The FAQ says to wash and fully dry the bottle before refilling, keep it away from direct shower spray and use opened products promptly. A refill discount is not a reason to stock up on a range you are still unsure about.
What this comparison cannot decide for you
“Botanical” or “silicone-free” does not mean suitable for everyone. The official FAQ does not give blanket suitability for all young children; check ingredients and consult a doctor about ingredient allergies or use on a child. This guide does not present Moist or Smooth as treatment for scalp conditions or hair loss, and does not test oil-control hours, scent longevity or comparative repair performance.
Your final checklist: preferred finish, full range name, SHAMPOO or TREATMENT, scent and size. Those five checks are more useful for avoiding a wrong purchase than an unsupported “best bottle” ranking.
