Bioré Face Wash in Japan: Pump Foam vs Clear Gel

Choose Bioré The Face Smooth Clear 200mL if you want ready-made pump foam. Consider Ouchi de Esthe Hada Nameraka Clear 180g if you prefer spreading a deliberately nonfoaming gel over wet skin. Neither needs hand-lathering, but their amounts and directions differ. No bubbles does not mean the gel needs a second wash with foam.

I’m Irene, from Taiwan and qualified as a pharmacist in Japan. This guide translates current Japanese labels into practical shopping and washing decisions. It is not a personal product test.

Choose your washing method, not a “strongest” cleanser

The pump dispenses foam. Start here if you like washing with lather but do not want to build it by hand. The product pictured is the full pump bottle, not a refill.

Nonfoaming gel: Hada Nameraka Clear

This clear gel is spread in circles over a wet face and is designed not to lather. Consider it if you prefer that method to working with foam. It is not a makeup-removing gel.

Kao’s selection FAQ also distinguishes these formats by preference. Both target pore dirt, but the format alone cannot establish which cleans better, irritates less or leaves everyone less dry.

Irene’s shopping order: choose a method you want to use, then check the version, fragrance and directions. An existing face wash that suits you does not need a foam-and-gel double act added to it.

Buying the gel again? Check 180g against older packs

Kao says the gel changed from 150g to 180g, while a former 200g size sold through some chains was consolidated into 180g. The directions here belong to the current 180g product, not an older review. The official range page records the size change.

Match 肌なめらかクリア, 180g and the JAN rather than relying on green packaging; 肌やわらかモイスト is a different gel. A 150g or 200g pack is not proof of a counterfeit simply because its size differs: check its own label and source. The foam bottle has also undergone a gradual packaging-design change, so an official photograph does not prove that every shop has switched stock.

The gel does not remove makeup or require another wash

Kao explicitly says this gel face wash is not a makeup remover: remove makeup before using it. “Gel cleanser” describes a texture, not a guaranteed makeup-removal function.

  • Wearing makeup: follow the makeup and remover instructions first. Longer contact with this gel is not a substitute.
  • Finished the gel wash: rinse thoroughly, then continue with normal skincare. Kao says another face wash is unnecessary. A lack of bubbles is not a reason to add the pump foam afterwards.
  • Sunscreen only: check that sunscreen’s removal directions. This comparison does not establish that either wash removes every water-resistant sunscreen.

Pump foam: 4–5 presses, without borrowing the gel’s timer

  1. First use: remove the stopper and press the pump several times to prime it.
  2. Lightly wet your face. Dispense about 4–5 pump presses into your hand.
  3. Work the foam over your skin, then rinse. The label suggests more foam, worked in carefully, where pore dirt particularly concerns you.

Do not press the pump while water is running directly onto it. Refill only with ビオレザフェイス泡洗顔料, not this gel or another cleanser. These foam directions do not specify 30 seconds. Full foam directions and precautions

Gel: a 3cm-diameter amount, about 30 seconds on wet skin

  1. Wet your face first. Do not change to a dry-face method to target pore dirt.
  2. Take clear gel about 3cm in diameter. That means diameter, not a 3cm strip squeezed from the tube or a 3cm-thick layer on your face.
  3. Work it over your face in circles for about 30 seconds, then rinse thoroughly. Do not try to make lather.

The label permits a more concentrated application where pore dirt bothers you, worked in well; it does not ask for a longer contact time. Near the end of the tube, the cap can be unscrewed to reach the remainder. Full 180g gel directions and precautions

The gel may turn whitish. Kao links that change to its formulation and sebum dissolving out. It is not an instruction to keep rubbing until white or proof that every pore is clear. Follow the approximately 30-second guidance, rather than a mask method from another product in the range.

Fragrance, frequency and children are separate checks

Both ingredient lists contain fragrance (香料). The foam is labelled bergamot-sabon scented and the gel Relax Aroma scented. Those are the maker’s descriptions, not my assessment of scent strength. Neither meets a fragrance-free requirement, and neither foam nor gel guarantees suitability for all sensitive skin.

Kao permits daily morning and evening use, as with ordinary face washes. This is not a requirement to increase washing or continue through a reaction. These are not the separate medicated Acne Care variants; do not buy them as acne treatments or permanent pore-shrinking products.

For a child, Kao’s advice includes a qualification: a guardian should check suitability together because growth and skin condition vary. Broad age suitability is not a promise that every child can use them without problems.

When to stop rather than wash again

  • Do not use on wounds, swelling, eczema or other abnormal skin. Watch for changes during use.
  • Stop and consult a dermatologist if the product does not suit your skin, or redness, swelling, itching, irritation, pigment loss or darkening occurs during use or after sun exposure. Continuing can worsen symptoms.
  • Keep out of the eyes. If it gets in, rinse immediately and thoroughly.
  • Store carefully to prevent accidental ingestion.

These precautions come from the two current product labels. A preferred texture is still subject to your skin’s response and the pack you buy; longer washing or an extra cleanser is not the goal.
