Choosing a Diane dry shampoo in Japan? Separate three preferences: avoiding added fragrance, seeking a cooling feel, and refreshing a fuller-looking root style. Fragrance-free, Cool and for Styling do not mean the same thing. In particular, fragrance-free does not mean menthol-free or irritation-free.

Hi, I’m Irene, a Taiwanese pharmacist licensed in Japan and working in a Japanese drugstore. When your fringe looks greasy while you are out, choosing the right can matters—but so do where, how close and how long you spray. Here is how to tell three similar cans apart.
Japanese official information checked October 22, 2026. Scope: three 95g Diane Perfect Beauty hair sprays, excluding collaboration packs, dry-shampoo wipes, Hello Diane Goodbye liquid mists and medicated antiperspirant sprays.
Three options: check the words on the can
Fragrance-free: avoiding added scent

Look for ドライシャンプー 無香料 and Fragrance free. The official positioning is to refresh hair affected by sweat and sebum. It is a candidate when avoiding an extra fragrance is your priority.
The ingredient list still includes menthol and ethanol. Do not interpret fragrance-free as no cooling sensation, alcohol-free or guaranteed suitability for a sensitive scalp.
Cool fragrance-free: seeking a cooling feel

Look for ドライシャンプー クール 無香料, with both Cool! and Fragrance free on the can. Its distinguishing feature is a cooling feel without added fragrance.
Cooling is not evidence of stronger cleansing, and this is not a heat-illness prevention product. Do not spray closer, for longer or repeatedly at one spot to chase a colder sensation.
for Styling: a fuller-looking root style

Look for forスタイリング/ボリュームアップ. This version is positioned for styling volume from the roots and has a Relax Citrus fragrance; it is not fragrance-free.
Volume Up refers to a styling effect, not more hairs or treatment for hair loss. Do not confuse it with the separate Sara-tsuya or Straight Keep variants.
A practical order: decide whether you want fragrance, then whether you specifically want Cool, then whether Volume Up styling is your priority. Their uses overlap: you do not need all three or to layer three sprays to obtain freshness, cooling and volume.
All three are 95g: compare names before colours
Write the full range name and 95g on your shopping list. Other scents, sizes and collaboration designs may be sold alongside them; the Diane logo or can colour alone does not establish an identical product. This guide covers use on hair and scalp, not instructions for +BODY products, antiperspirants or wipes.
For different sizes of the same version, actual price ÷ grams ×100 gives cost per 100g. Frequency of use, carrying needs and safe storage matter too. Price, scent and cooling sensation are not a tested ranking of oil absorption.
Shake, keep your distance, then work in sections
- Shake the can well up and down before use. The Cool fragrance-free instructions additionally specify upright use: do not spray with the can inverted.
- Hold it approximately 15–20cm from your hair and spray an appropriate amount toward the scalp and roots in sections. Do not press the nozzle against your scalp or spray across your face.
- Distribute with your fingers, then use your hands or a brush to tidy the style. If it feels powdery, the manufacturer advises wiping with a towel rather than adding more spray to cover it up.
All three warn: do not spray continuously at the same spot for one second or longer. Check the nozzle and target area first. A marketing promise of styling in a few seconds is not permission to hold the spray on one spot for several seconds.
Ventilation, eyes, flames and heat come before fragrance
- Ventilation and inhalation: use in a well-ventilated place and avoid inhaling the spray. NITE warns that flammable gas can accumulate; ventilate during and after use, and do not ignite flames or use spark-producing equipment until ventilation is complete.
- Eyes and face: do not use on the face. If spray enters an eye, rinse immediately without rubbing; consult an eye doctor if a foreign-body sensation remains.
- Fire and storage: all three ingredient lists include LPG. Follow NITE aerosol guidance: use away from flames and keep cans away from heaters, direct sunlight and hot vehicles. A smaller can does not make hot-car storage safe.
- Scalp and surroundings: do not use on a scalp with wounds, swelling, eczema or other abnormalities. Stop and consult a dermatologist if redness, swelling, itching or irritation develops during or after use. Keep out of young children’s reach, and wipe spray from floors promptly to prevent slipping.
Follow your local authority’s disposal instructions. Do not puncture a can that still contains product; ask about disposal if you cannot finish or safely empty it.
A refreshed appearance is not a completed wash
Dry shampoo absorbs oil and helps refresh appearance; it does not replace regular washing with shampoo and water. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) likewise advises continuing regular shampooing. Persistent scalp discomfort is not a reason to keep changing scents or increasing the amount you spray.
The short version: Fragrance free for avoiding added scent; Cool! for the cooling version; ボリュームアップ for Volume Up styling. Then remember shake, keep 15–20cm away, no continuous spray at one spot for a second or longer, ventilate and avoid flames—more useful than expecting one spray to remove every trace of greasiness.
