Before choosing a smaller pouch or a box labelled “refill” in a Japanese drugstore, check more than its price and volume. If you do not own the original container, ask: will I still need a bottle, pump, cap or other dedicated parts to use this?
I’m Irene, a Taiwan-born pharmacist qualified in Japan. This is a pre-purchase packaging guide, not a hands-on review. Some examples are classified as quasi-drugs in Japan; the discussion here concerns containers and replacement formats, not whether a product suits your skin. It does not replace each product’s directions and precautions. Official information checked: 30 October 2026, Japan time.
Check your container before choosing a refill
If parts are missing, check the listed contents of the original product or set. 本体 does not guarantee that all accessories are included. If you own a container, match its full Japanese product name and version against the maker’s specified compatibility—not just brand, colour or volume. Once compatibility is confirmed, establish whether contents are transferred or a tube, inner container or pack is replaced while retaining parts. Until you understand the format, do not cut, pour or force parts together.
Owning a container back home does not mean you can use its refill during your trip without it. If you want to use the product while travelling, establish which parts you need before paying. If you cannot confirm them, leave that refill for now.
These labels are clues, not complete instructions
- 本体: the original or main product format. Still check what is included and whether accessories are sold separately.
- つめかえ / 詰め替え: a refill clue. Next, find the designated container and method; do not assume a pouch can be emptied into any travel bottle.
- つけかえ: a replacement clue. You may need to retain dedicated parts rather than pour out the contents.
- レフィル / リフィル / refill: the word alone does not establish that this is a pour-in liquid refill. Check the actual product, format and included parts.
For example, CareCera AP pre-emulsion comes as a 130 mL pump bottle and a 130 mL refill. Equal volumes do not mean equal containers. See the CareCera bottle and refill guide to distinguish those two formats.
Compatibility depends on the version, not equal sizes
The Japanese ELIXIR Retinol Power Wrinkle Cream ba L refill replaces the tube while reusing a ba original product’s cap and inner plug. You do not pour cream back into an old tube. Shiseido specifies that this L refill works with the parts from either a ba S or ba L original product, but not the previous version’s parts.
So different capacities do not necessarily mean incompatibility, and equal capacities do not prove a match. Look for the maker’s explicit compatibility information. This example does not establish interchangeability across other brands or ranges. If you are considering this cream, read the ELIXIR ba original, refill and precautions guide rather than deciding to use it from this packaging guide alone.
Another format is Curél Bath Time Moist Barrier Cream’s hanging pack: the maker describes attaching its dedicated nozzle and hook to the pack. A pouch is not necessarily something to cut open and empty. The Curél lotion and bath-time cream guide explains the original set, replacement pack and accessories.
Do not borrow washing or reuse rules from another product
Once you have the right format, read that product’s package and official instructions for washing the container or pump, dealing with moisture, any replacement limits and the order of assembly. Kao’s shampoo and conditioner refill FAQ and its instructions for this Curél hanging cream’s nozzle differ. Neither is a universal rule for beauty products.
If you use FANCL’s foaming face wash, go directly to the dedicated-container section in the FANCL powder and foam cleanser guide, rather than transferring another brand’s refill method. This article does not provide a universal washing method, refill count or travel-decanting procedure.
What to ask before buying
- Exact product and version: bring clear photographs of the front and back of your existing container and compare them with the refill you want.
- Required parts: which bottle, pump, cap, inner plug, case or hook is included, retained or bought separately?
- Method and compatibility: does the maker explicitly list your product? Do you transfer the contents, or replace a pack or component?
You can show a shop assistant this sentence: 「専用の容器を持っていません。これだけで使えますか。別に必要な部品はありますか。」 It means: “I don’t have the dedicated container. Can I use this on its own? Are there any other parts I need?” For compatibility with an older version, keep the full name, barcode and photographs of the parts ready when contacting the brand’s official support. Similar-looking parts are not enough reason to assemble them.
Before paying: establish which container and parts you need, confirm the exact compatibility, and only then compare volume and price. This checklist helps you check packaging completeness; it does not guarantee skin suitability or cover tax-free opening restrictions or airline baggage rules.
